July is one of the hottest months in our area, we will be at 98* today with 90% humidity until the afternoon storm knocks it back to less than 80* and 40% humidity. I love air conditioning in July and August for this reason. Having said that how do you keep from sending all your money to the power company to keep you cool?
1. Close the blinds and curtains when you leave for work. I hate living in a dark house but I also hate handing money out to the power company.
2. Move the thermostat up a couple of degrees. Every degree up is fewer times the air conditioner will come on and shorter time for it to run. We set ours at 78* when we leave and back to 75* when we get home. Any time the outside temps are lower than 60* we raise the windows and enjoy the fresh air.
3. Cook on the grill or in a crockpot. Both will reduce the heat in the house. Turning on the oven heats the house up. Cold salads and grilled meat and roadside fruit stand fresh sweet corn is my go-to summer meals.
4. If you are allowed to, dry your clothes on a clothesline. Some subdivisions prohibit this, but mine does not. I hang sheets and towels every week. I love the crunchy feel of freshly dried towels.
5. And the best tip of all, summer is here so wear fewer clothes. Less is best in the south. I love my short dresses and sandals--even at the office.
