Happy Independence Day!

After several intense weeks in real estate, what could be better than a day off?

Yesterday was such a day, and the Mother Lode country beckoned. The gold rush of 1848 began the birth of our modern California, and seemed an appropriate destination for an Independence Day celebration.

The Amador Flower Farm in Plymouth was our "excuse" for a day trip, but first came an outdoor lunch at Amador Vintage Market, where we enjoyed delicious sandwiches and discovered their homemade potato chips.

Specializing in over 800 varieties of daylilies, the grounds of the Amador Flower Farm are lovely to wander through or enjoy a picnic in the shade of towering oak trees (the gift shop isn't bad, either!) We came home with two daylilies to plant in our garden allotment at Fort Mason in San Francisco.

Driving south along historic Highway 49 brought us to the gold rush towns of Sutter Creek, Jackson, Mokelumne Hill, and Angel's Camp. These are the towns made famous by Mark Twain's tale of the jumping frogs of Calaveras County and Brett Harte's "Luck of Roaring Camp." It's easy to feel the history here.

Stopping in various towns allowed us to do some olive oil tasting, visit an old-fashioned candy and ice cream shop (lemon sorbet was a delight on a hot summer day) buy some basil and summer squash at a local farmer's market, and enjoy the plaques of winning jumping frogs embedded in the sidewalk as we walked along.

Arriving back in San Francisco around 6:00PM, our simple dinner continued the day's fun - sandwich halves left over from lunch, potato chips and sauteed summer squash with basil -bounty from the Mother Lode.

--- Come for a visit; Stay for a lifetime!
