The shadow is what we think of it;

the tree is the real thing."

COMMUNICATION

Communication is not a universal language and different words and symbols means different things to different people. For example, when someone in the United States sends a family member a Happy Face, the person who receives it may feel happy. However, depending on who you send a Happy Face too, doesn't necessarily mean the same to them, as it does to you. Watching Asian news this morning, the news anchor woman explained that a "Smiley Face to the Chinese means something completely different, such as: A despising, mocking, and even obnoxious attitude."

Smiling with a wave can be perceived as even more insulting. In America it may be a hello or  goodbye. To others it may perceived as "I despise you and really don't want to talk with you. Go Away!"

In business, we must remember that in order to succeed you must be able to communicate properly and with etiquette. Using emoji is digital communication. Beware and be careful how you use it. Since today is National Emoji Day, you might want to think twice before you automatically send out an emoji. Digital technology is tricky. When in doubt, don't ---Patricia Feager

Good morning! Very interesting information. First, I didn't know it was national Emoji Day! And second, I didn't know what you shared about the wave and happy face/smiling. Communication doesn't work well when people think you are disrespecting them. It only works well when everyone is respectful. And knowing how a different culture will react is important (like shoes outside the door and the direction they are pointing!)

Hi Patricia... I really enjoyed this post. When I lived overseas there were all sorts of things I had to learn about daily social interactions to fit in.

Kat Palmiotti - I'm guessing you remember what I told you about the shoes and BIG mistake I made - LOL!

We may think emoji's are just cute little pictures but when it comes to business,  in the digital world it could make or break you without even realizing it. The more we know the better.

I like what you had to say about communication. When there is no respect, there really isn't success or repeat business either, is there?

As always, it's a joy to hear from you! Happy Friday!

Nina Hollander - I'll bet you learned a lot by living overseas! Another thing I learned the hard way while visiting my daughter was don't eat everything off your plate in a hurry, or they'll keep bringing you more food.

Barbara Todaro -- For me, it was a whole different way of life and very hard for me. I admire my daughter for having the ability to learn about people, places, currency, and culture before she moves or to live and work outside the US. If there's one big thing I learned in Japan was, never go outside in public without her. How she did it for so long, is beyond me.

Patricia, if smiling means stupid to the Japanese, I wonder what represents I am a genius?

Hello Patricia and Happy Emoji Day - who would have ever thought it would be used as a form of communication?  Styles and methods of communication are rarely universal but paying attention to the "norm" is as important as understanding the individual situation.

"I recall visiting my daughter in Japan when she lived there. Every time we went out in public, she reminded me not to smile because it means you're stupid."

I would have a difficult time in Japan, because I am nearly always smiling!

This is so interesting Patricia. I have read before how different cultures can be insulted by an innocent act. Don't arrive on time is one of them!

Very interesting ... something that most would never even think about when visiting other cultures.  I may have to just use my own Emojis, lol.
