Are You Go To or Go Away?

In my professional and personal life I find people who fall into one of two categories:

"Go To" or "Go Away".

This week Liz and I needed a new queen bee for one of our hives.  A long term queenless hive is destined for failure and it's critical to quickly get a new queen introduced to the hive so the vital social structure is maintained and baby bees are back on the assembly line!

And while Liz and I have learned a bit about beekeeping in the last few years, we're hobbyists and there's a LOT we don't know.  Thursday evening we found a true "go to" guy for honeybees.  About a 1/2 hour drive into the country and we arrived at George's home and bee farm.  LOTS of hives and LOTS of knowledge that he was willing to share.  This was beyond transactional (although we did buy a queen bee from him).  We got a crash course in how he raises queen bees and runs his bee yard.  We've got some ideas to bring back to our own itty bitty 6 hive bee yard and know we can go to him at any point in the future for guidance.

I've got Go To home inspectors, loan officers, title companies, website developers, auto mechanics, appliance repair companies and more.  Loyalty earned because I can TRUST them AND they are competent.

My "go away" category can grow too.

The email this morning from the lead service claiming to have texted me (and I never received)?  Just a pretense to get a response.

The local dealership I called about getting new tires and couldn't be bothered to respond?  Yeah, they're on a certain list too.

People on social media that change comments, manipulate and delete and otherwise prove they're not trustworthy?  I've got a special list for them too.  Persona non grata.

While I strive to be Go To for people, I may be Go Away for some.  I accept I'm not a perfect fit for everyone.  But hopefully I am the Go To person when someone needs an agent in my market.

That's funny and I suppose necessary these days. I don't keep lists, I just keep them in my phone and either under last name or company name I mark them "Joy Stealers" s that if they ever dare call or text me again, I know they were poops last time. Many agents never get second chance with me due to their unethical or morbidly rude behavior last encounter.

Haha, Joy Stealers! I love it. I might have to "steal" that idea, Thomas J. Nelson, Realtor e-Pro, CRS, RCS-D, Vets

Hello Liz and Bill - having a list(regardless of the form it may take) is an important part of life.   It's good to be on the right list.

Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go.

Good morning Bill. The "go to" group is ever evolving. Once your are on it you have to earn the right to stay there. Enjoy your day!

Agreed, I've got some former "go to" people that moved off the list for various reasons.

Yes, just like Santa's Special Lists, we both strive to remain on the right one.

Great that you found a wonderful resource for your bees.

PS - you'd be a Go to in our book.

You'd be a Go To in my book!

And I find your bee stories so interesting, since I don't know anything about bees except for what you share. What happened to the last queen bee?

We don't know for sure.  She could have departed with a swarm, got eaten during a mating flight, or had some other event that killed her or took her away from the hive.  Still plenty of bees left to right the hive prior to cold weather returning.

Great title!  And I really like Michael's comment! Spot on.  I ran into a go away PT place this week. Wow not on my go to ever again.  Same goes within our industry. There hasn't been too many that end up on the go away list....but when there is, it's a BIG go away.

It's so interesting learning about your bee hives.  Keep sharing as it's really cool stuff!

Hi Bill- first of all love the quote by Oscar Wilde, thank you Michael Jacobs Years ago I read of the books written by a favorite actor, David Niven. There was a phrase in it that went something like this...It would be so nice if you weren't here.

I would not want to end up on my Go Away list, just as I'm sure I'm on the Go Away list of others.

And thank you for continuing to educate us about bees. Intriguing.
