So, You're a Lurker...6 Reasons to Become an ActiveRain BLOGGER!

I know you're out there right now.... In fact as I type away there are 422 lurkers on Activerain right now. I wonder what you are thinking? Are you here as a consumer to learn more about real estate? Perhaps. But I would be willing to bet that there are quite a few of you who are real estate professionals of some sort, checking us out. You've heard of Activerain, and read some posts. Our posts can be very informative, enlightening, creative, and downright CRAZY! Yes, we are a lively bunch aren't we?  We are all different and have come here for different reasons, from all parts of the country and world. Why, What's up with that? I mean, it IS hard, and it takes so much investment. It's why we have joined Groups to study blogging!

I came here originally, to plug my business, and expose the idea of real estate virtual assistance to those I like to work with the most, real estate agents. But, what I got I didn't expect. I received alot more. So as you read this wondering if and when you should take the chance at this blogging thing, I say do it! And here are some reasons that you should consider, reasons that don't jump out at you at first:

1. Blogging Makes us Think

It forces us to organize out thoughts and ideas. It helps us to put meaning into our thoughts and "put it out there" to give it validity. I've received more inspiration in my business, my personal goals, and in life by the supportive comments and posts, and more importantly by the people who share them. Strangely though, I sometimes get more joy in learning about others, and what they think about.

2. Blogging Is a Way for people to Get to Know Our Goals, Skills and Dreams

In some ways, if these parts of us are not written, they can be forgotten. Blogging about my ideas and thoughts gives me a sense of accountability. Hey, I mean, its out there. What if someone is waiting for me to act on my ideas..? What if I'm inspired by someone else's skills, and that makes me better? I wouldn't want to miss out on that. I can always grow and learn.

3. You Are Visible, Not Invisible

Just look at how each post makes us more visible. Our great profile photos, smiling faces, and quality content can make a lasting impression. It also gives us a chance to change as we grow. We can compare ourselves to our peers, and seek to improve upon what is visible.

4. Your Voice, Uninterrupted

Yes, I have a personal life. I have a husband, darling children, a dog, and lovely home. But I have something else. A Voice. (no, not a crazy voice) A voice that isn't always expressed in everyday life, in my normal conversations. This is a chance to say something, uninterrupted. If we take the time to think through a thought, we can present it fully and entirely.  There is magic in that.

5. Shameless Self-Promotion

Yep, I said it!  Want some honest to goodness promotion? Blog with quality content and convert it to audience attention! With audience attention, comes COMMENTS. If we're lucky enough, those comments will make us think. The comments we receive can also show us how our voices can be interpreted in different ways. That can change you, or give you internal validation once again, and can even set thoughts into motion.  Some commenters are even destined to be friends for life, I guarantee it.

6. Create Your Legacy

Talking is forgotten. It floats away. Blogging is forever, or at least until tomorrow. Readers will know us long after we can say anything about it. Search engines can help that happen.

So stop what your doing, think about what you want to say, put those thoughts together, and start blogging! We have comments waiting for you! And so much more...

Hi Laura - I think this a great post and you've listed terrific reasons to get on with the blogging for those who haven't started yet.  I love "We have comments waiting for you".......

Happy Blogging!

Yes, I have learned a lot here by reading the blogs and getting good advice from them. I find that many Realtors don't mind to share their secrets especially in the secrets of good Internet networking. This blogging can't be anything else than a good thing to do.

Laura - what a wonderfully refreshing, well-crafted and engaging post! I would 'feature' it, but I see someone has already beat me to the punch! Is it possible for moderators to award Double Stars???

Aaaah, "Shameless Self-Promotion".  Don't ya' just love it!?

Hey WOW! SVW:)Thanks!

Hi Theresa~ Well, I'm not completley sure of course, but I look at whose online that are members and those that are just online.

Ann~ Thanks alot! I'm definiteley one fo those who comments more than blogs, but I love it anyway!

George~ That's what I picked up on first, the invaluable information being shared.

Rich~ You are too sweet, my friend:)

Sarah~ Yes, shameless aren't we?! I love it too:)

Hey, Laura!  Great post!  I can understand why people lurk, and I don't mind it.  I think some people might be leery about posting comments or blogging, so they hang out for a while, until they gain the confidence to say something.  That's all right by me.  Yet, I definitely think it's to our benefit to blog and be active in the virtual community.  I've met a lot of great people simply because they found a blog entry or podcast I've done in the past.

03/09/2007 03:12 PM by Amber Riviere (411 Real Estate Place & Cenla Moves, LLC)

For sure learning how to blog properly and regularly is a must for all agents,  Glad o see you touch upon the importance of it.

In the newly coming web 2.0 world most communications will take place on forums and blogs.  So anyone who isn't communicating this way will certainly be handicapped.  And selling is tough enough as is.

Really well donw, Laura. Some great points to share with others - well written, entertaining, and it clearly reflects YOUR enthusiasm for being here. Bravo. Bet we see some lurkers taking the plunge now!

I want to add and stree the amount of knowledge that a blogger gains by READING other posts.  I have learned more in the year that I have blogged than my past  years.  There are so many issues, companies and websites that I know about that others don't.  I learned all from blogging!

Great post and very well written!!

03/09/2007 04:23 PM by Christine Forgione - Associate Broker (PCA Realty, Inc.)

Ditto all around. Blogging makes us share our personality, in addition to our business skills. Realtors are people too. LOL :)

Great post, Laura.  I think taking the first step is the hardest, and I remember how thrilled I was to have support for my first blog article and try to do the same when I see a new one.  You can always be conservative like me and make it a "members only" post the first time.

George makes a good point about people being scared to give away their secrets.  I read from several "how to" blogs (like Copyblogger) that if you think you are giving away too much information you are probably doing it right.  People are so savvy these days - they are going to find out the info somewhere, and it might as well be from you!  Thanks for a great post, Laura.

Laura.... great post and a great reminder. But your children says that mom has a crazy voice...  ;o)  teasing.....

Seriously, some good points mentioned. Numbers 2 & 5 I think are the biggest. Not saying that they all weren't good.... but that is what makes me strive to post and to comment, #'s 2 & 5. And #1  is right up there also. ;o)

Amber~ Yes, its good to lurk to find out how things "work". Diving in can be scary, but it all works out!

Matt~ If I had never joined AR, I would'nt have know about any of it either. I would just keep missing the boat.

Jeff~ Thank you for your compliment:) I am enthusiastic. (most of the time..)

Christine~ Christine, I agree 100%! It's unbelievable the wealth of knowledge one can find here in such a short time.

Sean~ "Realtors(R) are people too" too funny:) Yes, You are, and you have alot to say.

Betsy~It's alot of fun isn't it? It does inspire you to keep on going. I've loved your helpful blogs:)

Agreed!  More people should be engaged!  I do think that as AR grows and grows, it will have more of a local focus and somewhat reduced national interaction (due to sooooo many members)...thoughts?

Laura, you made great points.  I wonder what percentage of the people blog that belong to Active Rain?  Any idea?

03/09/2007 08:19 PM by Century 21 Showcase

Sorry Laura...

I couldn't resist. Kinda what happened to Eve. LOL...

Okay. I'm done messin with your head. I really do have a comment. I don't lurk very often. Maybe every 500 comments or so I need a break. Mariana Wagner made that graphic for me for just such an occasion.

I have this thing about letting a Blogger know I read their post. I don't feel right about reading and lurking. But, that's just me.

By the way this comment of mine is comment #6,516...So much for lurking my dear. LOL...

P.S. I'm still wondering if I have broken a comment record with that. Maybe I'll ask the AR guys about it. Curiosity is killing the cat :-)

Eddie~ You are right! Where else can thousands of people see your written words for free?!

Kaushik~ I hope our larger numbers haven't made us more imtimidating to join on in. Like mario said, the more the merrier!

Mario~ Yes, the more the merrier, I like that! I'm already overwhelmed thinking about how many posts I'm missing out on~

Lisa & Robert~ Thanks so much for your compliment:)

Kaye~ I agree with what you said as well. Comment to get your feet wet. Especially since we can comment on each other's comments~

TLW~ I love that! What's that I see up there above..? You're lurking on my post, and the star of another one!!!:)no wait two! wink wink;)  I'm yankin your chain darlin'. You are the Goddess!

Timothy~ You don't, I wonder that myself. Maybe the AR gods would know.

Just Lurking lol.  Seriously though, this is a really great post.  I lurked for weeks when I first stumbled onto Active Rain.  When I first took the plunge it was pitiful and I was very insecure about it.  Funny thing is, that wasn't all that long ago, it just feels like a lifetime.

Lurkers...hmmm...Voyeur Blogging..now there is a concept.  I think the President Johnson called us the silent majority.  Lurking nothing new to society...some folks are verbal, leaders..some are willing to carry the spears..not throw them.

03/09/2007 09:35 PM by Andrew Mooers | Northern Maine Real Estate / Aroostook County Broker (MOOERS REALTY)

Well, have to say, I am a lurking lurker.....which, for those that know me, is rather unusual! I have spent about a month now, just reading once each day, getting a feel for what is being written about (don't want to re-invent the wheel, and write something already written about - BORING!). Give me a few more weeks, and I bet I'll have something to say - for now, I remain number 366 (the number in the upper right hand corner) admiring the bravado of all you folks who have taken this terrific site to the level it's at.  Thanks for the post, it may have given me the nudge I needed! Liz

I think your encouragement is great!  Is takes a giant leap of faith to go from lurker to blogger!

Well written...I have lurked (a lot), posted (a little) and commented (ok that's easier).

All I have to say is: it is better to lurk and be thougt a fool, than to post prematurely and prove it! A little lurking goes a long way towards learning the flavor of a community.

03/09/2007 10:43 PM by Beth Larsen, Sedona Arizona (RE/MAX Sedona)

I've been lurking near a phone trying to get in touch. What's up? Pat Kitano and I are talking to people up that way about a possible blog class.

Don't leave out cooking. Blogging gives you a great reason for your spouse to fix dinner!

Great Post, I think we all forget that we really can have something important to say.  The smallest idea can change our thinking into something big.

03/09/2007 10:44 PM by marketing-real-estate.com

I agree with every point, good post.

I think that many folks are intimidated; and many others are, as you said, looking for info, but won't take the time to contribute.

I have just posted, on my blog, a request for help getting started.  I am obviously started, or you wouldn't be reading this; but when I think about the big picture, and weather or not I am on track, I really don't have a clue.

Although "Blogging for Dummies" is probably out there, I have had a hard time finding info on the basics, like: 1.  Point your mouse at "Leave a Response"  2....

Off to see if a virtual assistant is in my future..

*Holds hand up and waves frantically*

OK, I admit it, I was a lurker for a long time, reading through all your posts contemplating whether or not I wanted to jump in and get my feet wet, but didn't. For a long time....but if I had read a blog like this one before when I was here "lurking"...it would have made me start blogging and commenting sooner.

I just had a thought....I imagine the blogs start off looking so newbie-ish in the beginning for the people who hadn't done it before and gradually improve. I wonder what I would find if I searched the top dogs back to their first blogs here? *Big Grin* Because I know how sad my first one was....and hopefully I am getting better...LOL

You just gave an open door invitation...let's see who walks in....

Great post and very appropriate. These  thoughts have crossed my mind a few times. Congrats for the quality and initative to write and post it. Bottom line for you lurkers out there. Absolutely nothing to lose and everything, again everything to gain......so what are  you waiting for?

Great post Laura. I guess I can be cosidered a lurker, but I think I'm more of  shopper. I'm like Kelly, new to all of this, only a few months ago I didn't even know what a blog was. So I have been window shopping so to speak, trying to find people like yourself that been posting good information on the value of AR, and how to get started. I am finding that there are a lot of people here who not only through their post's, but also in their  comment's are very willing to help you. Like Phil said, it is very intimidating, but I guess if you don't take the first step, you will only see the view from one spot. I'm not sure when for sure, but I hope you all will be hearing from me soon.

Thanks Larry

I guess I need a Virtual Assistant to do all my other stuff so I can have time to blog:)  Do you know any good ones?

03/11/2007 04:11 PM by Realty First Real Estate & Mortgage Services

Blogging on Active Rain is away to find new ideas. I agree with your first point. From the organizational perspective it helps me with my train of thought. I feel this helps my personal business because I have to stop long enough to prepare and go thru a thought process.  In addition, the exposure to the mass public is invaluable.

Blogging is forever?! That's a scary thought (maybe I should brush my teeth and floss before I blog?:-)

I do like the first comment that blogging makes us think. Writing about anything forces me to go a little bit deeper on any topic.

03/11/2007 06:27 PM by Irene Potter (John L. Scott)

Hi Laura,  Thanks for the "nudge" I only joined AR last week and have commented but have been thinking about what I want to write about.  But I don't really consider myself as a "lurker" - I think I am a "reader" - I do try to comment and not just read and move on but reading a lot of posts has given me a lot to consider in terms of getting going on blogging.  I do have ONE QUESTION - at the end of your post it lists what groups the post is included in....how is that determined and who determines it?  Thanks for your time and your informative and very readable post.

Great post, I am guilty of lurking myself. To be honest I have just "lurked" since my last post in January, I have many excuses for not posting since than by the way :). Well a funny thing happened, even though I have not posted since January I have had 2 leads in the last month from AR. I also was inspired to become active in active rain once again by a post Mr. Marriott made re: google placement & AR posts. So . . . thank you for posting about "lurking" it really makes sense to jump in and become part of this awesome community once again!!

Ditto Kevin,

Just in the last week I got a couple of inquiries. AR is an amazing community, and blogging does make you stop and think.

03/21/2007 11:17 PM by Beth Larsen, Sedona Arizona (RE/MAX Sedona)

Kevin,

Make sure you post your listings as well, in addition to inquiries from potential buyers, search engines will pick them up, re: your reference to Mr. Marriott.

03/22/2007 02:14 AM by Phil Sharp (Abbey RE inc.)

Phil:

do you mean as mentioned somewhere else: there is a group where you can post listings by address or do you mean in my regular blog? Point 2 has a code that you can take ( I think it's called listings to go) and add your listings that way - will the SE like that as much as hand posting I wonder?

Sorry for momentarily taking over your post Laura.

I am really starting to learn the power of blogging.  It really is AMAZING!
In the first few days I had an agent in Florida email me about a comment I made on a camera post.  Marina Del Rey, California all the way to Florida (shameless SEO move), from one Realtor to a real estate agent/appraiser.  He wasn't even asking about a home, loft, condo, investment or anything related to the listing I have in Santa Monica.  Just reaching out for the answer to a real estate related question, possible real estate referral opportunities, and maybe even a new friend who happens to be in real estate in Marina Del Rey, California.

Alright, I will stop.  Really truly though, I have only been on Active Rain for a few weeks and blogging here has not only taught me a lot about real estate, but has opened up a whole new way of looking at the internet, my business, and life.  Sounds weird, but it is true.

I was already someone who thought outside the box, but blogging has truly exercised my want, ability, and need to think about and see things in a very new and different way.

Very exciting!  It's like a mental excercise.

Hi Laura

Great Post.  It was put togather very well.  It was very interesting,  I bookmarked it.  That is the first time I have bookmarked a blog.  What does bookmark actually do?  I am not sure.  I enjoyed reading all the comments too.

Thanks
