Declutter and Clean Before Listing Your Home

By
Industry Observer

Getting your home to look its best before you list it can be one of the most important things you can do to sell your home.

I am currently in the process of helping my mom list her home for sale.  Unfortunately, my mom is also a hoarder.  After the walkthrough with the realtor, it became clear things needed to change if we were to get the best price for her home.

While changing behaviors is not easy, we quickly realized that we would have to do some decluttering and cleaning to make the home presentable.

We started going room by room through the home.  The items that were outside of the dressers and cabinets were the most important things to declutter.  I found that when my mom had help (my sister and I), she was willing and able to get rid of many items that she had been holding onto for years.

We have since taken 6 entire truckloads of items to the Salvation Army and Goodwill.  Her home looks so much better now, and I think she is excited for this new change in her life.

All it took was a little encouragement and understanding.  For example, there were some collectible bears that were non-negotiable.  We assured her that we would keep these items, but we were able to put them in bins in the garage and get them out of sight.

After decluttering, we noticed that a lot of dust had accrued in the home as a result of the clutter.  We followed a simple cleaning routine to make her home sparkle.  We also shared this routine with a local cleaning service so that they could upkeep the home while it is on the market.

Her home is now in great shape to be shown to potential buyers.  Even more importantly, she is very proud of the progress we have made.  She is excited for this new chapter in her life, and we are excited for her.
