Cowboy Coffee

I was reading this blog post Stop and Smell the coffee by Connor MACIVOR here on Active Rain and it reminded me of something my brother told me about when we were out camping one time long ago. He said that cowboys made coffee in a special way.  Without a lot of implements and cooking gear and with only a campfire to heat the coffee, they were not able to measure the coffee or tell from any standard recipe when it was actually done.

The cowboys would simply place the pot full of water on the campfire and pour a bunch of ground coffee into the pot full of water.  This mixture was stirred with a spoon as the water heated up and more coffee added if it seemed like it was needed.

When the spoon stood up in the pot, it was not ready.  It was ready when the spoon dissolved.

Bill, thanks for making me laugh.  That was not the ending I was expecting.

Thank you Christine,

We aim to please.

This is actually something my brother stood there by the campfire and told me as he stirred the cowboy coffee we were brewing.

My family and visitors say that's how I make my coffee. I don't like watered down coffee it has to be rich in taste and aroma.

Bwahahahaha.  That's how I like a cup of coffee.  Black, acidic, no frou frou drinks for me.

Our grandmothers use to use eggshells when making coffee.  They would put them in the coffee basket of those percolators that go on the stove.  Does anyone know why?

Good question - kind of like putting salt on top of the grounds.  Let em see if I can find something "out there ..."

Yes - according to several places on the Internet, the egg shell is supposed to remove some of the bitterness.
