Beyond Hoarding - a documentary

I was introduced to Beyond Hoarding, a 2019 documentary motivated by director David Coffin's personal experiences as the executor clearing out the hoarded estate of his Great Uncle John, during the International OCD Foundation's 2020 Online Hoarding Meeting. The film is a painstakingly balanced and sensitive examination of hoarding disorder.

Balanced because it demonstrates the wide range of manifestations and possibilities of hoarding disorder, from people dying from the living conditions they create, to people battling back to much more typical environments. Sensitive because it offers a comprehensive dialog on the disease, from the perspective of people with hoarding disorder, their neighbors, friends and families, first responders who may incidentally encounter people with hoarding disorder, and service providers and mental health clinicians attempting to help people with hoarding challenges return to healthier practices.

I strongly recommend viewing it as another way to learn about this insidious illness. Several brave, generous participants in this film are deeply affected by hoarding disorder. They gave a tremendous gift of themselves.

I would be a great Hoarder but Diane keeps nagging me and I am forced to get rid of Stuff... love to hold on to memorable items.... Newspaper article three years ago about the Northern CA washout of PCH.... we had friends visiting and had to have the article saved.... why because they did not believe me that we need to go up Interstate 5 vs the coastal route... needless to say got rid of it last week:))Endre

Endre Barath, Jr. The fact that you kept that article only until it outlived it's usefulness shows that you're not hopeless Lauren

I have to admit I have a lot of old "stuff"-but to me it's preserving precious family memories. Things are framed, old letters are on thumb drives, old handmade rugs are still in service out of traffic areas.  I've cleaned out family homes and know how overwhelming it can be. But patience is important.  A friend was cleaning out her aunt's home. Because I hook rugs, I asked if there was any wool I could buy. She brought me a trash bag full of wool and an old unfinished quilt they were going to throw away. The fabric of the quilt was from the 30's and 40's. King sized and handsewn. All I could think of were the hours spent on this beautiful project!  I have it almost finished and will add my friend's aunt's name to the label out of respect for her work.  Maybe I'm a mini hoarder-but some things you keep bring great pleasure.

Barbara Tattersall I don't hear "hoarding" in your narrative, for what my opinion is worth. I hear someone who carefully evaluates what she will and won't keep, and who finds realistic, achievable means for keeping what she decides to keep. If you follow this link, it will send you to the therapeutic criteria for diagnosing hoarding disorder. If you are concerned about yourself, see how that description resonates with you, and then perhaps seek help. Lauren

Interesting. I wrote this down and will check it out. All information we can get about people and how they live is useful when you're in the people business and the house business.

Enjoy your day!

Kat Palmiotti Hey, my reply disappeared in cyberspace. Phoo. Thank you for having the compassion to learn more about hoarding disorder. The more it's discussed and understood, the more likely it is that people afflicted by it can get help. Lauren

Good morning Lauren. Downsizing and moving to another state forced the issue as years of file were shredded and cabinets of books were donated. Now we are here and continuing our efforts. Enjoy your day!

We had a friend that was fine until her son moved out and got married.  She started saving everything and next thing you know no one was allow to come to her house.

Will Hamm Yes, the more that hoarding disorder is studied, the more it seems to often be a maladaptive response to trauma. There are also strong genetic and learned elements to it. PLEASE feel free to email me at lauren@casualuncluttering.com and let me know what city your friend lives in and I can point you to resources. Lauren

Our team once listed the house of a hoarder who had passed away. It was being sold to settle his estate. You could hardly walk through the house through the narrow pathways that existed through the "stuff". Except for the bedroom in which he slept, it was not possible to enter the bedrooms because they were FULL of stuff.

In truth, it was a sobering experience!

@John Juarez It breaks my heart when I hear stories like yours. There are people whose illness is so severe, they can no longer sleep in their beds. Lauren
