Kansas Innkeepers have perfected the B&B experience

Just a 45 minute drive south of the suburbia setting of my Overland Park home, sits Cedar Crest Lodge on top of a knoll overlooking woods and the rolling hills of Pleasanton, Kansas. We opted to not travel for leisure this summer by airplane during the year of COVID and social distancing. I thought it seemed a little indulgent to drive this very short distance just for additional seclusion, but we were really getting a little tired of staring at the four walls we call home.

So, we set out for a long weekend getaway and had a very lovely stay at this charming country inn. I almost found myself saying "I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore" because it had a feeling reminiscent of my beloved Hudson Valley region in my home state of New York. It turned out to be a perfect escape into the countryside.

The setting here is absolutely peaceful and we enjoyed the natural beauty of the woods with trails leading to multiple ponds. Each day we got caught up with our reading while laying poolside or sitting on our private deck with a glass of wine. Evenings were spent enjoying the spectacular sunsets while having a scrumptious dinner on a back patio at the lodge which overlooks the rolling hills to the West.

The meals were yummy and prepared farm to table, using all of the fresh picked produce from an on-sight garden. The grounds are meticulously cared for and our guestroom was clean, comfortable and felt like a cottage of its own. The owners have thought of every possible amenity. The package we selected was perfect and included an amazing “couples massage” in the carriage house. Unlike most bed and breakfast places, dinner is also included in the nightly price but for a nominal cost we also opted for a midday cheese and cracker platter the first day which was satisfying and ample enough to store half in our mini-fridge, which sustained us for the next day too. We brought our own small case of wine, as they do not have a liquor license, but they had plenty of other nonalcoholic beverages to satisfy our thirst, whether day or night.

I know others who share my reluctance of the intrusiveness in staying at a B&B that is physically somebody's home. Not to worry. This is a set of buildings and attached quarters, each with separate entry. We stayed in one of the carriage house units, which has an individual outside area that made this experience secluded and even more special. And, the common areas are so spread out that we rarely saw another soul, but only in passing by. It’s like we had the place all to ourselves most of the time, but still had the personalized attention from the staff when we needed anything at all. Which, by the way, it’s worth mentioning that these are the friendliest innkeepers and staff you could possibly ask for to help make a getaway as perfect as can be. Loved our stay! Thanks Matt, Laura & staff!
