Richard Milton Hollingshead, Jr., was born in Riverton, Burlington, New Jersey back in 1900 to Richard Sr., and Emma.  Again, I do not have any information about his education or early years. In the 1930’s he worked as a general sales manager at his father’s auto parts company, Whiz Auto Products.

He had an idea about something that would place him in the history books.  After experimenting several different designs, he applied for a patent in 1932, he received patent number 1,909,537 in 1933.  His first operation opened in Camden, New Jersey in 1933. He sold his first operation in 1935.  Because he had trouble collecting royalties in 1937, he filed a civil suit.  In court, his patent was ruled invalid in 1950.

While you may not know his name you surely know his patent.  For he was the first person to invent the drive-in-theater.

Hi James - that is very interesting.  I wonder why the patent was invalid.  Probably a lesson there.

As Endre says we have seen some of these pop up in our area now, using the FM on your radio to listen to the soundtrack. Very interesting that the idea was patented.

I have some good memories from the drive in theater days.

Most drive-ins are gone having long ago been developed into homes or retail space.

Our local county fair grounds are being used for the modern drive-in theater experience in the days of social distancing.

No Burlington, just Riverton. Here is the invalid patent.

He also invented what looks like a combo vault, a prior in practice.

A KFC receptionist (LOU., KY) once asked me that she wants to apply for a car women make- up mirror PATENT that has pink lights on it. I said I thought they already have it you put a pink tranparency over. Why don't you walk upstairs talk to one of the patent lawyer?  She said good idea.
