I've been thinking of ways to get some free marketing done and create some relationships at the same time. Last night I had a no-brainer idea that has started some good dialogue. I attend a mega church in South Orange County. I got to thinking there must be several members in the home loan business I could network with to drum up some business.

I went to Google and typed in "mortgage" and then the name of my church. I came up with several pages of websites. I went through a few of them and e-mailed the people I found. I just gave a friendly message that we go to the same church and I'd like to network with them for business. I got one mediocre response and another interesting response that was hard to analyze. However, I was happy to get responses almost immediately.

I'm going to keep doing this and also consider what other affiliations I may have that I can use to build networking relationships through common interests.

Food for thought for anyone else looking for ways to connect with people.

That is a good idea. Using every facet of your life as a potential is good thinking.

Dennis,

I like your idea, we all seek common ground with people and what better common ground to seek than sharing your faith?  I would think your prospecting would be well-received.  Careful, though, when you deal with a close knit group one bad day will cost you plenty.  Make sure to keep all your church clients VERY happy.  Good luck!

Dennis,

Good thought.  I believe that many people face this as a "gray area" where they are hesitant to say the least at moving forward in due to the sensative nature.  But...  If this represents yourself, and from what it sounds like your faith is a large part of your brand and who you are, then I would say it's Authentic and admirable.  I talk alot about this aspect at my blog entitled The You Factor (not shamelss self promotion...) where I encourage many of the agents I work with to embrace this one true differentiator, which is indeed themself.

On another note, if you are prone to random thoughts of greatness, you might want to check out www.utterz.com  This is an audioblogging feature that I have found totally cool.

Networking with people of common interest, outside of realestate; is an excellent source.

Keep working at it.

Matt,

Thanks for the good word. I love your take on that. I hadn't thought of it as a grey area, but I completely see your point. I'll be cautious. You are also right about my church being at the center of who I am. It's natural for me to try to build connections based on my involvement there.

Have a good one,

Dennis

Dennis,

The only reason why I call it a grey area is that anyone in a Word of Mouth or Referral Based Business is told 1st thing to market to their sphere.  Put as many people as you can into a list and market to them... cold hard marketing.

So put yourself in that situation.

1. Someone like yourself who is genuinely interested in helping those out that share your beliefs

or

2. Someone that goes to the "Mega Church" not because they like the scripture or shares the belief, but because they have the largest pool to draw off of.

I'm not saying don't do it by any means if you are genuine and authentic, as you seem to be.  I'm just cautioning you as to what people might have in the back of their minds.  Just remember the Golden Rule and be genuine about who you are and you'll be fine... more importantly... you'll be you which is the #1 rule of good business and advertising.

I offer charitable service to members of my church who can not afford to pay for the service. I have had several members call me and although it is not necessary to hear their story, they are eagar to share. My service is advertised in the church announcement because it is a ministry. Yes, my ministry has attracted both mortgage and real estate agents whom have referred paid jobs to me when they were in control. But most of all, I am grateful just to know, pray, study and socialize with them.

My church is 30 miles from me and I charge a travelling fee if I have to go over 20 miles round trip.  I told my pastor that if a member needs notarization that I would waive the travelling fee or if they could bring the documents on a Sunday I could help them after services since my supplies stay in my car.
