Roseann~ You can click on  each commenter's comment and go to THEIR blogs and then comment on one of theirs that interests you.  You should also answer them back on your own blog.

Reply on your own blog post through comments. And simply thank them! State their name, maybe in bold, than add a one liner if their comments do not require detailed ellaboration. E.g. XYZ - Thanks for the encouragement.

It's also a nice gesture to click-through to their AR blog, see what they have to say and if the topic allows, engage with them on their blog as well. Of course, on their blog, talk about their topic.  Just like you, they appreciate comments as well. This is why ActiveRain is so special. People are extra helpful in most cases!

just kidding.   most of us use the comment section and respond either individually to each as appropriate or to the group in general.  As you develop your reading list pay attention to how the writer handles comments.  As a new blogger here in the rain, remember you get points for the first 10 comments you write each day.  Don't limit yourself to just 10 b/c commenting is where you make you first impression on the other bloggers.

As peers comment on your posts try to check them out.  Not everyone is interested in the same things but it opens up another group of people to get acquainted with.  Have fun exploring in the RAIN.  be good  cheryl

Roseann, TLW wrote a great post on reciprocation called "Have you considered reciprocating your comments".   I read it after I had been on Active Rain for 6 months and wished I had seen it earlier.  It was really the turning point for me on Active Rain.  The best thing you can do is to go to their blog and find something to comment on; that will be a wonderful thank you.
