I Pledge Allegiance ... Maybe I Will But Maybe I Won't !!

Allegiance is a word that we never hear too often, and yet, it’s a major factor within our real estate profession. We have and owe a duty to many of our contacts during the course of each day.

Once we are licensed, we are hired by a Broker/Owner.  We owe that Broker a loyalty that goes beyond making money. We represent his business; reflect his attitude; adapt to his work ethic; and promote his values.

How are Broker/Owners regarded by the agents who work under their license? Working under that Broker’s shingle is a two way street. Agents usually feel they are not being provided with enough. Enough of what? Enough of everything!!

Agents usually jump ship for monetary reasons. That’s the one factor that should have been negotiated prior to accepting an affiliation. Jumping ship for a few extra dollars is distasteful and results in poor thoughts about the office and the agent.

There’s nothing that can’t be negotiated, if one is worthy of that new deal. The problem arises when the agent has illusions of grandeur.

Having said all of that, allegiance is a tough act to follow through with, and the Broker/Owner is the one who takes it on the chin and/or must continually reinvent the wheel within the office.

I was always asked why I didn’t open my own office. My answer was that I would need allegiance, and agents do not have that degree of loyalty.

Just another thought for the moment....

Hi BarbaraT- This brought back memories of when I managed an office of staffing consultants. One consultant wanted to leave but her reasons were all over the board. It was as if she didn't like the color of the walls, so she wanted to leave. After we finished speaking I said...so what it boils down to is that you don't want to be here anymore.

Hello Barbara - an interesting topic and one where the agent/broker relationship is a unique one in business. That said, "divorce" between the two is all to common especially as communication and respect break down.

it seems that respect breaks down easily, especially in a tough market!!!!

Barbara, you hit on one part of why agents leave the second reason is dissatisfaction with management, if a new manager comes in and it does not fit the existing culture and starts making changes agents leave...so it is not just about money, Endre

well, if new management comes in and does not mesh with the agents, the Broker/Owner did not do a good job of selecting the right manager....mutiny happens and the Broker asked for it!!!!

Morning Barbara.

There are two, agencies where I have not been able to recruit any agent to our firm.  Those are very loyal agents.

There are many reasons why agents leave brokerages. Money is just one reason. I left a previous brokerage for a totally different reason, and they were not even interested enough to know why I was leaving. That said something right there.

Allegiance has to be a two-way street.  I am always allegiant but after that allegiance isn't being reciprocated I no longer feel like they are worthy of my allegiance or friendship for that matter.

yes, and that's why I focused on the most typical reason.... agents are difficult to keep happy....but is that a task for a Broker/Owner!!!

Hi Barbara Todaro - it is like a marriage.  As you know it starts with selection and shared values.  Then development of relationships.  This is the same in the corporate world.

Barbara,

Loyalty can be easily bought in real estate and in business.  Those signing bonuses in mid 6 figures are very enticing to those who are in dept.  I have seen up to 90% real estate offices bought with signing bonuses.  A

Hi, Barbara!  I haven't jumped ship many times, but it's almost always involved the aquisition of my old company by a much bigger fish that, after three days or so didn't taste all that great.  And it's always got to be a business decision.

Sep 11, 2020 11:13 AM
Barbara Todaro

once a larger fish swallows that smaller one, there's always a loss of agents....a change of culture does that....

Barbara Todaro - Paragraph 2 resonated with me. I like structure and loyalty. It's a two-way street and when trust is real, it really makes a difference to me. I like my Broker to treat me like I treat my clients - there has to be respect, loyalty, integrity, and honestly. I believe virtues are the bedrock for success. A Broker doesn't need to be a babysitter - just there when the need is important. Being independent and treated fairly is the ultimate way to succeed.

I fully agree..... it's a two way street....and trust MUST be real.... Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP  there's not enough of that today....

Barbara, it is strange when you see an agent jumping around from company to company.  They need to think about what that looks like to their clients.
