The annual Playboy Jazz Festival (the 30th this year) at the Hollywood Bowl is a hugely popular event.
With a terrific venue like the Hollywood Bowl in the entertainment capital of the world, how can you go wrong? The festival features two days of both well-known and lesser knownbut up-and-coming jazz performers and the first day always seems sold out (and in my opinion has the better list).
The line-up is usually pretty good, with some performers that stand-out and others that are, perhaps, a bit more lackluster. But folks are there to enjoy the outdoor party scene with about 18,000 in attendance in the Bowl tucked high in the Hollywood Hills, so if the current performers don't interest you, you can enjoy the people watching while you dine and drink - there's lots of socializing, dancing and folks just having a great time.
For the 4th year in a row we packed a wonderful picnic and spent about 7 hours with our daughter, her boyfriend, and two other friends listening to some pretty good music until about 10:30 PM. Rick Braun was the best - my opinion - but the 29-year Japanese keyboardist, Hiromi, was incredible. No way I could capture her on video from where I was sitting but she was truly amazing. Another favorite of mine was the all-female Diva Jazz Orchestra featuring big band music.
It's only 2 hours from Carlsbad, so it an easy thing to do, especially if you stay over night - take in the Farmer's Market at 3rd and Fairfax (where The Grove is) for breakfast. The Hollywood Bowl line-up this year looks great, as always, so consider a trip to enjoy one of the best outdoor venues around. Why not take in one of the fireworks spectaculars?

Hi Jeff, This was a great mix of possible technology, widgets and tools that provide a broad range od possibilities for capturing the imaginations of all who witness this. Wonderful post!
What a wonderful place this is! I enjoyed the pics & video, bringing back my many happy visits back in the 80's when I lived in LA. I used to take my kids to the wonderful summer day programs. Wonderful!
Virginia - oh yes, we had a terrific time, and it seemed like all 18,000 folks there did as well.
Ray - hey, how are you. GOod to see you back after so many months. Hope you are well.
Thanks, William. I am uploading more videos to vimeo but thought 1 was enought here. The event itself is a visual and auditory delight (well, as gustatory as well).
Sharon - so true. We usually get there several times each year and always enjoy ourselves.
Linda - it was perfect. The weather was fabulous, great company, terrific food, wonderful music.
Mara - I'm glad it brought back pleasant memories.
Eleanor - you're welcome. It was fun to share and relive it myself. :)
