Sweeney Todd - Review

While Sweeney Todd has its problems, they are minor, and Sweeney could be deemed Burton's best film in a long time. Burton nails it, beginning with the casting and continuing with the cinematography and the fantasy-nightmare version of 19th-century London.  Sweeney Todd is the name assumed by Benjamin Barker, once a joyful London barber with a wife and baby daughter but now a toughened, angry man. It seems the wicked Judge Turpin desired Barker's wife and trumped up some bogus charges to get Barker shipped off to jail.

After a 15-year prison sentence, Todd gets home to find his wife dead, his home sold, and perhaps most terrible of all, his daughter placed in charge under Judge Turpin the man who wrongfully sentenced him in the first place. Fortunately for Sweeney, the woman who bought his home, Mrs. Lovett, put aside his razors for him, and promised to help him get his vengeance. Her meat pies are the most awful in London due to her low-quality meat (cat meat), and so the two arrive at a deal: he fulfills his bloodlust by slaughtering the occasional client, and she will turn the corpses into meat pies. Her shop becomes a smash hit!!!

It's a bit of morbid humor, however, I really enjoyed this flick. Check it out if you get a chance.
