Phone calls that make you go hmmmmm

By

I am not sure what to think. It was unfortunate I had a seller sitting next me signing a listing contract when i just got this call. As he signed, he said tocanswer it, I have to read this anyway. So I answered the phone, Good Morning, Scott Godzyk. Then was asked "If I would like some help in selling my home?"

Was this a joke? Did i know this person? Did they not know I am a real estate broker?

Sadly being with a client who looked at me and said to answer the phone, i could not be as witty as i may have been in my car alone. A call at 8:20am is usually important.  So I answered.

SO was this agent new?

Did they even scan the "do not call list" prior to making a cold call as they were calling personal cell phone?

How did they not know who I am? This town isn't that big...

The caller was very unsteady, nervous and his voice cracked. Was he trying to read a script? When I asked why he thought I would want to sell my property? He had no answer. Feeling the terror in his voice, i let him know I was a real estate broker. My seller looked at me puzzled before asking if they were calling to list my house? I said yes and was not sure to laugh or cry as i held it in.

IN SUMMARY, some may ask what was wrong with this? Where to start... First they did not check the do not call list. Second, know who you are calling before your call them. Third, if you are going to make cold calls, practice in front of a mirror and build  confidence before you actually call the public.

IN THE END:  Today's blog is not to pick on anyone. My seller looked at me and said, "I am glad i chose you to sell my home." The seller then laughed as he said, "that guy must be new, how is he going to sell a home if he can not make a phone call correctly." I burst out after holding it in and so did he. His wife looked at us both and shook her head. And how did your day start?

LET ME SHOW YOU THERE IS A DIFFERENCE IN AGENTS.

Hello Scott - deciding if it is appropriate to laugh or cry(along with all sorts of reaction) is something that might be on a daily list of things to do when answering the phone.

I think that phone call was a sign of an agent who wants to "make it in the business".... that deserves a serious answer and a congratulatory statement that encourages him to continue to call....  I guess that's the manager in me shining through....

Good morning Scott Godzyk ,

This agent must have been embarrased. I am surprise he would cold call anyone before 9am in the morning..probably not smart.

Hello Scott, what makes me go hmmmmm even more than the call itself is the fact that the seller asked you to answer his phone.

Congratulations on the listing!

I have no problem simply hanging up on cold calls.  I am on the Do Not Call List, and if they don't bother to check that out, they have no right to any response from me, other than, "Click."

Scott- it's alarming the number of people who pick up the phone and try to cold call someone without any idea of what or whom they're calling.

I feel sorry for the person who called. I'll bet he was told to just call people by his manager. Maybe even given a list of numbers. He needs some coaching, mentoring and training.

Not easy for some folks just starting out.  Many times I've encouraged and mentored agents to just get started, make those calls, get out and meet people etc etc. And if you're uncomfortable, good. With some practice you'll get good at it all and at some point be teaching people the " how to's' yourself!

Oh dear, sounds like agent's manager neglected to provide training on use of the Do Not Call List.  It's one thing to let your agent learn by experience, but at least do the minimum to prevent him from embarassing himself.  He'll laugh about after a few years, if he's still in business :))
