everything a newbie wants to know about commenting on Active Rain but was afraid to ask
Everything  Newbies Want To Know About Commenting On Active Rain But Were Afraid To Ask

We just started the new Active Rain Question of The Week Group this week. Anyone is welcome to post your question that you would like to have answered about Active Rain and Blogging. Only Active Rain  and Blogging related questions please. Each week I will answer one of the questions as the question of the week and post the answer on our blog.

This week's question of the week comes from a newbie Yvette Smith regarding commenting and reciprocity on Active Rain. You can read here post here. Please support her and comment on her post. Yvette Smith Virginia Realtor

Yvette says she is commenting on those whom she subscribes to first, then to the featured posts and then she finds those she does not know yet to comment on their posts. But she is not getting a proportionate amount of comments on her posts. She gives way more comments than she receives. So she wants to know, what's the deal?

She wrote her first post at the end of April and has written approximately 30 posts. As a newbie you may want to see immediate results on members coming to your blog and commenting right away. Well, that rarely happens that fast. Stay focused, develop a complete blogging schedule and strategy and then be consistant and keep up with it. What I see happen the most is going all out when a newbie first starts blogging and when they fail to see the results right away they get discouraged and either stop blogging or do not stick with the plan.

When you start to get some comments and a few subscribers but then do not have a consistant blogging schedule those people are going to stop commenting on your blog, they will move on. I see this happen even with agents I coach. I teach them how to get subscribers and I send my subscribers to their blog and what do they find? Wishy washy  and inconsistancy. Then they wonder why they are not getting comments. Now Yvette is not wishy washy nor is she inconsistant. She does write a lot of Localism posts which is what  I would coach her to do as well. That is what she needs to do to focus on the consumer. But at the same time she needs to write some engaging posts for agents to develop the relationships for referrals and of course, friends.

Always remember that there are always way more people reading your blog than are commenting. Add stat counter and Cluster Maps to your blog so you can see the readers all over the world. Consumers read but rarely comment. You can look on your statistics page on your home page and see a listing of each one of your blog posts, how many comments you received, how many people viewed that specific post and how many click throughs you had. So how many comments you are getting on your blog is not indicative of who is reading your blog. Now if you are having no views and no comments, then you have a problem. You must stick with it.

You will always make more comments than you receive in the beginning of your blogging on Active Rain. It is a process. Yvette needs to give this much more than 2 months time to analyze her strategies. There are a lot of theories on how to get people to comment on your blog. I am going to list the tips that I used when I first started blogging on Active Rain.

Tips for getting more comments on your blog:

  • Comment on Active Rain members who have a lot of subscribers. I look for people who are new to commenting on my blog. At first I notice that you are new and think that is great. Then after you have commented a few times I will go and visit your blog to find out more about you. You will eventually get noticed by the top bloggers if you keep in their face.

  • Choose 10 bloggers who you really enjoy reading. Then make sure you comment on every one of their posts. Make this a consistant practise. Soon these blogger will come to know that there is going to be a comment by you on their blog. They will eventually notice your comments over and over again and soon will pay you a visit. After you have established the relationship and feel comfortable with the first 10 you can then add on another 5 to 10 bloggers to add to your list of blogs to comment on. Do not bite more than you can chew. Easy does it.

  • Comment on Localism posts. This is a great place to establish gratitude and loyalty. Choose ten areas of the country where you might get referrals to your area from. Start to learn about those areas. Choose the bloggers in those areas that you will comment on. I made the very first comment on Margaret Woda's localism posts. She was so thankful that I was supporting her Localism posts that she started to read about my area and commented on my Localism posts. This eventually led to a wonderful friendship as well as a working relationship. This is a powerful strategy because most people do not comment on Localism posts. Most members are attracted to the posts that help them in their business and blogging. You will really stand out from the crowd by implementing this strategy.

  • See who is always commenting on the blogs you are commenting on. Then go to their blog and start to make comments. Soon these same bloggers will notice you and some of them will get the clue and start coming to your blog and commenting on your blog. You already have some things in common. You like the same blogger.

  • Join Groups. You will make connections within those groups and develop some friendships which will result in adding comments to your blog. There is a commonality within these groups.

The most important tip I can give you is to write good content. If you apply all these tips but do not have good content that people want to read you are not going to get people to comment on your posts. Word does spread around. There are top bloggers who are looking for those newbies to spotlight and support. If you are writing top notch content you will eventually attract people who will comment on your blog. One thing leads to another and soon you will have subscribers who will be eagerly waitng for your next post!

To add your Active Rain question of the week, join the group- Active Rain Question Of The Week and then post your question of the week there.

What a great idea!  You always post very useful information althoough I have not had the time to read as many as I would like

Thanks for continually offering great advice.  I did my first post today and received comments already and didn't even recognize that there were tips to get more!

Hi Katerina,

Thank you very much for all the wonderful advice!  I'm going to register soon.  I'm also going to encourage my clients to register and participate on Active Rain.

Thanks for the mention, Katerina - that's EXACTLY how we first got to know each other.  And look at you now... the Queen of subscriptions.  The truth is that some people will usually reciprocate comments and others don't bother (it's not possible for anyone to do it ALL the time!) - You'll quickly realize who they are - Katerina is one of them, and there are many others.  After a while, you need to clean house and unsubscribe from people who never reciprocate, even if you like reading their posts - there are only so many hours in a day!

06/17/2008 03:26 PM by Margaret Woda, Maryland REALTOR (RE/MAX VISION)

You wrote this for newbies but even after 9 months I am still learning, thanks!

06/17/2008 03:27 PM by Dick Betts (Dick Betts National Speaker)

Great answers Katerina. I have found that many people I meet, have commented on my posts and I start to see their name, so I go and comment back then a relationship is born.

Also I still comment on several peoples posts that have NEVER commented at all on mine. I sometimes wonder why I still do that, but basically I like what they write so I just let it go.

Katerina - Nice tutorial on the art of commenting for newbies.  There are some terrific tips here.

Great post Katerina - you have the best ideas - can't wait to read more!! Greetings from Clearwater :)

Wow Katerina, your timing could not have been better.  Though I've been part of AR since March, I'm brand-spankin' new to blogging.  Like many others here, I've gained lots of knowledge and am finally at the point where I definitely have my favorite bloggers. (Yes, that would include you. :-))  And this is my first comment with Katerina, so yay!

I'm still trying to get the hang of all the techie stuff, like adding images, what tags are, etc.  And about that content? I think that's my biggest obstacle and I love to write! Haven't quite built up the confidence needed but I'm working on it.

Thank you so much for starting this group and look forward to more questions, answers, and comments. We newbies appreciate it.

06/17/2008 04:19 PM by Carin Arrigo-Zimmer (Referral Real Estate Services, Inc.)

Great post--consistency is the key! It's always nice to see an increase in comments on your blog--it makes you feel good!

06/17/2008 04:34 PM by Christina Dowell Realtor, Central MA (Worcester Property Management LLC)

katerina, All the new people (and many of us that have been here) always find something useful that we gain from your posts...I don't have Cluster Maps :)  I need to do that.  Congrats to you on your feature.

06/17/2008 05:24 PM by Carole Provenzale Owner, Feng Shui Long Island & New York (Feng Shui Long Island & New York City)

Katerina -great points. AR members are alsways appreciative of comments and your suggestions are all the steps to getting people to come to a blog. The point about consistency is very important. People move on, when the blogger stops being actively involved. I know from personal experience:) Like Missy, there are people who don't comment on my blog, but I still do on theirs, because they write good content.

06/17/2008 05:25 PM by Faina Sechzer - Princeton, Montgomery, Hopewell, NJ Real Estate Expert (Henderson-Sotheby's International Realty)

Katerina,

I'm learning something new every day, even with this blog. Thanks. Getting a decent amount of comments takes time, just like getting blogging benefits on Google placement will take some time. It's a long-term process, but will eventually reward those who stay with the program.

06/17/2008 05:42 PM by Esko Kiuru - Las Vegas NV Mortgage Consultant (Sinifox Financial)

Truer information never given.  Sometimes you don't get comments but people are reading them

Look forward to earning your comments too!

All very good tips Katerina.  More than half of the folks I'm subscribed to (in my estimation) is because of the comments they make in of themselves.  It doesn't have to be on my post though. Heck, I subscribed to you for a fantastic comment I read from you.  I can name countless others as well.

Time is of the essence in all of our lives and while I appreciate the fact that some folks strictly comment on their 'subscribed to' list or on featured posts, I believe it goes a step further.  Finding those new folks, those gems, the proverbial diamonds in the rough and making a solid contribution to a thread can do wonders for your readership. This may come not only from the author, but the unexpected folks who come across that post and your coment and their interest in your contributions is suddenly peeked.

I do like the new group:-)

06/17/2008 06:56 PM by Jason Sardi, Pennsylvania Mortgage Broker (First Choice Equity Group Inc.)

Katerina-  What a great idea - AR Question of the Week Group, and good choice for the first question.

Many of the bloggers, I've subscribed to, were chosen just as you stated.  They consistently had interesting comments, which led me to read their blogs and ultimately subscribe to them.

I still find it challenging to think of something substantive, about which to write.  As a result, I've posted a lot more comments than blogs (27.)  Reading your tips reminds me that being consistant is important.

I guess I'll have to apply a bit more discipline to my blogging....but not 'til July.... I'll be spending most of the remainder of June, cruising Long Island Sound to Nantucket Sound.  ;-)

06/17/2008 07:34 PM by Marilyn Katz - ABR, e-PRO - WestportCTProperties.com (Prudential Connecticut Realty)

Great idea on the Question of the Week!  Thank you for the wonderful advice -- I am clicking on the "subscribe" button right now!

06/17/2008 07:38 PM by Kerry Lucasse (Keller Williams Peachtree Rd)

That is very good information.  I didn't think of a lot of those things that you suggest.

06/17/2008 07:48 PM by Barbara S. Duncan ABR, CRS, GRI, e-PRO Searcy AR (RE/MAX Advantage)

Katerina:

Great post. Very useful information. One thing I do, that you did not mention (or I missed it):When I receive a comment, I make it a point to visit their blog and leave a comment thanking them for stopping by and taking the time to comment.  That has created a lot of reciprocity. In addition, I always make a point to comment on my subscribers blogs first. They have taken the time to subscribe, so I want to return the favor by leaving comments. I also make it a practice to subscribe to my subscriber's blogs as well.

This has begun to really pay off in dividends. My Views and Click Throughs have increased dramatically.

I can't stress enough about Quality Content, though. Sometimes quality content is simply hitting on a nerve that the community responds to like "featured posts." Wow, that's a loaded one.

Anyway, that's my two cents. I'm a fairly recent AR member, January 2008 and I'm really starting to get results.

Lisa- You make some great points for newbies. This only works for while you have a group of subscribers that you can handle. We have over 720 subscribers and there is just NO way that I could ever comment on all of their blogs but I do my best to make some rounds and am working on getting to more and more of my subscribers. I did a post about this once and it was voted by majority that my subscribers would rather me write more posts than to stop writing to comment or even to reciprocate all the comments. Most of my tutorials get almost 200 comments and that is just overwhelming and I do feel bad that I can not get to each of these comments:)

Welcome To Active Rain Lisa! Thank you so much for commenting and know that I truly appreciate your comments. I still get excited when I see comments on my posts!

Thanks for the post you actually cleared up a few things I was wondering about that really helped put alot I have made several mistates in the ;ast when blogging

06/17/2008 08:51 PM by Makea Turner (Coldwell Banker)

Two points are very well taken. Join groups.

There are so many groups that it is difficult to find all that you might be interested in. Sometimes it is difficult for me to find 10 posts that I can contribute a decent comment to.   I hate to comment just to comment.

Having a several groups on topics that interest you helps find interesting blogs for your own comments.

Another point that I think is good. Commenting on localism posts seems to be a good idea. These posts are generally a thing of pride and joy to the person who posted it. Others may not share the same interest in a far off place. Many of the posts are fun, interesting, enlightening, and informative about other areas. Good reads, and good places for welcome comments.

My own comment total is skewed also. It could be time in AR, group placement, posting time, title selection, or likely in my case, weak content.

Comments help the commenter. And blogs help the poster, especially if the ultimate audience is the public community.

Thanks

Richard

A home run, Katerina!  It was through commenting that I forged my first relationships here in the Rain and they have really helped me along the way.  I love that you take the time to teach not just your consumers but other agents each week.  Another great job and I appreciate you for it :)

This sounds like a good way to build readership for a blog.  It seems like consistency is key in getting noticed in the blogosphere.

KATERINA!!!  OMG!!!  I can't believe you put me in a post!!  I was sitting at my son's softball game, thumbing thru my blackberry, checking out AR & low and behold I find this post.  THANK YOU A MILLION TIMES.  I feel so honored that you, a blogging, RE guru, would write about little ole me!!

I won't quit!!  See, it's just like dieting to me, I always want instant results...in everything, I'm impatient!!  I want instant gratification!  But, I have learned to have patience.  I will follow your tips & everything you write.  I can tell you that AR is the best thing that I've ever stumbled across on the web.

And, of course, consider this post BOOKMARKED!!

Thank you again!!!

Sincerely,

Katerina, I have said it before, I will say it again- you are too awesome!  Wise, helpful, loving, supportive, teacher, mother, you do it all!

So, my question, how much time, on the average, do you spend a day blogging and on AR?

Katerina, I just joined the group. Thank you for setting it up. Very valid and relevant points regarding Yvette's question.

Great Post!  This is excellent information.  I am in the same boat as Yvette and I haven't seen the comments but I do understand it takes time to build relationships.

I think the idea of commenting on LOCALISM posts is splendid. I write a lot of localism posts and many don't receive so much as one comment.  They are loved by prospects, but few rainers comment on these blogs.   You will get noticed if you comment on someone's localism blog.

Good thing you started a group Katrina..becuz as you know...and have commented to me...the "Snoopervisor" for the Newbies decides what they should know even though some of us think what we have to say is important to Newbies...they seem to know better...Blog on !

06/18/2008 07:54 AM by Sally & David Hanson, Southeastern Wisconsin Realtors (First Weber Group)

Sally and David- I rarely post in the newbie group. Here is a list of what they will delete:

What will be deleted from the group

  • Listings
  • Advertisements
  • Meme's
  • Point Stories
  • Achievement Stories
  • Market Reports
  • Anything about markets, banks, foreclosures, etc.

They will accept posts that are instructional about blogging on Active Rain. Well, I have posted posts that are for active rain blogging and they get deleted too. So I just don't know anymore what will stay and what will be deleted.

I love the group and the value there is tremendous. Just am not always on the same page I suppose. Thanks for your comment.

Matt- Localism posts are also a great way to learn more about different parts of the country. I always notice the comments on localism, it takes a special effort to move beyond the typical comments on blog posts just for agents.

06/18/2008 05:16 PM by Karen Gentry>>Charlottesville, Virginia Real Estate Professional (RE/MAX Excellence-Charlottesville VA)

It's a lot more than commenting, IMO.  It's about joining in a conversation.  Once you read a sufficient number of blogs, folks will become familiar with members with whom they have common interests, like the way they write, or have the same goals or interests.

It grows and grows until you have a wonderful groups of about 500 steady friends and a few that drop by from time to time.

06/18/2008 05:23 PM by Lenn Harley, Homefinders.com, MD & VA Real Estate

Katerina - I have read and commented on Yvette's blog - she is very good already !  As you said, I noticed her comment on another person's post.   She just needs to keep it up and time will tell.

I check the list of blogs I am subscribed to for new posts, then my list of people who have subscribed to me, then features, then groups.  It takes over an hour a day just to keep that part up!

Great post for all of us, thanks!

06/18/2008 06:07 PM by Virginia Hepp Mesquite NV REALTOR>> Mesquite Nevada Real Estate Specialist (ERA Brokers Consolidated - Mesquite NV Homes)

Lenn- I love how you put that! It is all about the conversation. I do think that many people who are newbies are shy to really break into the conversation. I know I was. So you get your feet wet a little here and a little there. You find where people are friendly in return and then you open up a little more and then it goes on from there.

06/18/2008 06:30 PM by Nestor & Katerina Gasset, Realtors® Wellington Florida Luxury Homes (International Properties and Investments, Inc.)

Virginia- It does take an hour just to do that, however think of the time we actually are saving! I don't have to spend money on gas, put my makeup on or even get out of my pjs just to hang out with my friends!

06/18/2008 06:31 PM by Nestor & Katerina Gasset, Realtors® Wellington Florida Luxury Homes (International Properties and Investments, Inc.)

Margaret- Thank you! You are so sweet! I have come to the point in my blogging that there are times where I just can not return every single comment. Sometimes I have to choose, comment or post a tutorial that will help more people. But in the beginnning there is no reason to not reciprocate every comment. I don't expect people like Bryant to respond individually as many comments as he gets!

06/18/2008 06:36 PM by Nestor & Katerina Gasset, Realtors® Wellington Florida Luxury Homes (International Properties and Investments, Inc.)

Karen- Thank you! I hope the newbies and veterans use this group to ask their questions. I think that we can all learn something new.

06/18/2008 06:40 PM by Nestor & Katerina Gasset, Realtors® Wellington Florida Luxury Homes (International Properties and Investments, Inc.)

Missy- There will always be people we like to read that do not comment back or reciprocate. I will still comment on theirs too. It is overwhelming to go to everyone's blogs though!

06/18/2008 06:47 PM by Nestor & Katerina Gasset, Realtors® Wellington Florida Luxury Homes (International Properties and Investments, Inc.)

Ruthmarie- That is right! You will get noticed when you comment on Localism posts. That is how I made all my first friends on the rain.

06/18/2008 06:50 PM by Nestor & Katerina Gasset, Realtors® Wellington Florida Luxury Homes (International Properties and Investments, Inc.)

Thank you so much for the tips on building better relationships while blogging. When I joined AR about 3 months ago, I identified those blogs I wanted to read every day and have tried to be as consistent as possible...even today, I am writing from the hospital as I await gall bladder surgery in the morning...Active Rain has been a great outlet for me these past few days!
