FOCUS

People who are especially talented in the Focus theme can take a direction, follow through, and make the corrections necessary to stay on track. They prioritize, then act.

Personalized Strengths Insights

What makes you stand out?

By nature, you feel very good about yourself and life in general when you exhibit the self-discipline to apply all your energy -- mental and physical -- to a job, assignment, goal, or obligation. Instinctively, you can mentally zero in on tasks for hours at a time when you have a goal to reach. When the assignment demands extra time, you would be wise to honor your body's natural rhythms. In other words, if you are a "morning person," work in the morning. Work in the afternoon if that is when you hit your stride. Work in the evening if that is when you think better. Work around midnight after everyone has gone to bed if you are someone who usually stays up very late. Chances are good that you are determined to be in charge of your own destiny. This is your life. You intend to be the ultimate decision maker regarding personal and professional matters. Driven by your talents, you yearn to get ahead. You strive to acquire many of the status symbols and special privileges that come with rank, title, or position.

Ideas for Action:

When you set goals, discipline yourself to include timelines and measurements. These will provide regular proof that you are indeed making progress.

A reinforcement of the principle that if you have goals without target completion dates it is difficult to see what progress is being made, and if you are "on track".

Your greatest worth as a team member might be helping others set goals. At the end of meetings, take responsibility for summarizing what was decided, for defining when these decisions will be acted on, and for setting a date when the group will reconvene.

Absolute key for moving a group or team forward.  This is done at each and every team meeting or 1 on 1 meeting with team members.

Stretch your goal setting beyond work. If you find yourself becoming too focused on work goals, set goals for your personal life. They will give weight to your personal priorities and thereby help create balance in your life.

I have an opportunity here.  Most of my Goals are work focused.  To get better balance I must define and document my Personal Goals in greater detail, and prioritize them to the same degree I do my Work goals.

You function best when you can concentrate on a few well-defined initiatives and demands. Give yourself permission to reject projects or tasks that do not align with your overall mission. This will help you concentrate your efforts on your most important priorities -- and will help others appreciate your need for focus.

While I find myself multi-tasking very often, I agree that I'm at my most effective when lasering in on a specific task.

Take the time to write down your aspirations, and refer to them often. You will feel more in control of your life.

This has already been done to a certain extent, but there is more opportunity here for fine tuning. This goes on the short term "to do" list.

The diagrams fooled me.  I thought is was a science experiment.

I fall into that multitasking group.  I seem to be always be doing several things at once.

I am writing this while officiating the playing hall at our State Scholastic Chess Champions and eating my lunch.  I still have to work on that laser beam thing.  The guy next to me is a physicist from MIT who works on lasers. Maybe he can help recalibrate me.

It's a crazyworld for sure.  I used to think the older you got the more you slow down.  Ha....well that is simply NOT the case. If has only gotten worse for me.  I am more wound up than ever.  If there were 48 hours in the day I still couldn't finish all that I have to do.

I'm a focus kind of guy Tony.  At least that's what Mr. Tom Rath says in his book "Strenghts Finder 2.0".  Thanks for the reading.  Great stuff.
