That looks like a great campground. And the river current looks pretty swift! Is there a place to swim?

Lisa, Right now the current is too swift and the water too cold (53 degrees).  In the summer its not much better and I wouldn't swim here.  There is a great swimming hole on the North Fork on the Santiam and many terrific swimming holes.  The main branch of the Santiam is best suited for fishing, rafting, tubing and kayaks.

What about swimming, fishing, and rubber boats? Can we have a fire?

Hi Leslie,

I grew up down river from there, between Stayton and Marion and I can guarantee the Santiam never warms up enough to enjoy the swim. However, you are right, the North Fork has a number of fun places to swim and have fun. Bugs have always been a problem up there tho.

Nice photos, keep up the good work.

In response to jgswalko, fires are permitted in improved campsites only in all Oregon campgrounds.

Fred, I totally agree with you about the river, it is way to cold to swim in.  I also think it is difficult for a novice to navigate the upper portion of the river. It is best to go with someone who knows the river a couple of times before going solo.  I did email the other person back and gave him some alternatives.  It's nice to hear from another "Local" and I hope I hear more from you soon.  Take care and have a good weekend.

Thank you Leslie for the wonderful post about this wonderful park -- I had forgotten how wonderful it is there - so close to Salem and well worth the trip.  It's been a few years since I've been there, but you've inspred me for another visit!

OMG! That lake! And that nature trail! First of all, the photos are beautiful, and the post itself reminds me of all the camping trips my family took together when I was a kid =)

Hi Leslie. I've had a couple of listings in that area. It's really pretty there and many sites are right on the river. Amazing! We do live in a beautiful part of the state.

I was going through all the posts in the Things to Do/Places to Visit group again. I was chuckling at the way we bombarded you with questions. Then I saw all the "by"s. I've seen that on several different posts. I know they were doing some work last week, but there's one for yesterday. They're obviously still trying to work out all the kinks.
