Healthy Home Design Features: Mud Rooms?

"I haven't seen one of those in years!"

Monsignor Walsh Drawing

Some of you may remember this penciled treasure I stumbled upon which was drawn by my great uncle.

It's likely this home had a Mud Room!

Many of us have heard the term but wonder what, exactly, is the purpose of the Mud Room? Is it just wasted space?

Most of us understand a Foyer...the grand entrance to the home where we greet our guest and welcome them into our home. It is thought of as a very clean, inviting place....until Andrew enters with the rambunctious Kodiak (the family puppy) after playing in the puddles! Now it is not so inviting and our guests have to trip over the muddy shoes left behind!!!

A little internet search led me to the history of the Mud Room.

A Mud Room was traditionally the entrance used by the family members. Farmers would come in from the fields and have a basin in which to wash their hands, children would have a place to remove their dirty shoes and items (likely germ infested) from school...and we would have a place to wash Kodiak when he played in the crick (lol! Now I'm making fun of me!)

With the advent of indoor plumbing space was at a premium and the mudroom was sacrificed. Laundry rooms were moved towards the "family" entrance and took the place of mud rooms. Does it make sense to bring dirt in to a room for which the purpose is cleaning?

Mud Rooms can serve great purposes in your home

  1. a barrier to keep the outside from being dragged in
  2. a user friendly area to store keys, purses, locate lockers for kids (and Mom's) to drop their "stuff"
  3. a nice area with a bench to remove shoes and change to house shoes or slippers
  4. what a great place for wet umbrellas!
  5. how about a place to clean Kodiak! AND store Kodiak's leash! AND store Kodiak when you are training him and have to leave him home alone!!!

Mud Rooms can serve to keep your Indoor Air Quality better...

Just think about the barrier from exhaust fumes and gasoline for the mower from entering your home when the mud room is placed off the garage entrance if you have an attached garage!

Today's Mud Rooms, despite the name, can even be attractive! Take a peak at this Mud Room Furniture from LL Bean! How attractive is that!?!

Let's give our ancestor's a little credit for knowing how to make our homes healthier and cleaner! No matter what state you are in or what your climate is...

Let's hear it for Mud Rooms!!! What a great HEALTHY design feature to incorporate in your new or remodeled home! Rah! Rah! Rah!

Challenge: I want to hear from you! Can you think of other uses why  your home will be  healthier when you incorporate a MUD ROOM???

HI Mercure~ Yes. A shower would be awfully handy in the mudroom! Also a sprayhead for bathing the dog! We are working on some great ideas here!

I think it's also necessary to have a door not only to the garage passage but also another between the mud room and the rest of the home! As long as we are thinking of plumbing we need to have a commode so that when gardening we don't need to track all that mud into the home!

Thanks for your comment!

HI Joan - I'm glad you are just getting showers and not the torrential rains they are getting in the midwest. Those poor people...

Mary......I wish more homes had mudd rooms.  As a kid we always entered thru the garage area where we took off our shoes and washed up.

It's funny you blogged about this because we have started one and hope to have it finished over the summer. I will post pics if we ever finish it. We moved outside to work on a new chicken coop this month.

The reasons we are building it....for better organization, as in when the 6 kids come home from school, they will have a designated place to hang coats, hats and backpacks. Secondly, to keep so much dirt from being tracked in. We don't have carpet in our home because I am a strong believer that it is bad for homes, people and the environment, but I still don't like the tile floors to be dirty. Lastly, because that side entrance was nothing but wasted space. I was tired of air conditioning a space that could be used for a better purpose than just being a wide open area of nothingness.

Hi Pam! Thanks for expressing the need for it! As consumers demand it more builders will build it! I am fortunate enough to work with builder's who have the foresight to design a feature such as this into the home. It has been a "fun" idea to introduce to a whole new breed of people!

Hi Cheri! I grew up in a Brady Bunch! 3 girls, 3 boys - so I understand the organization you talk of that is sorely needed in my house with only 2 kids! Wow! Bless you!

You have very defined, excellent reasons for completing your mudroom! I agree with you about the carpeting. Especially with animals it tends to contribute to poor air quality in the home. I know you will enjoy your mud room when you complete it and would love to have you post some pictures! Especially  of the organized spaces for kids things! Thanks for the post!

I love Mud Rooms! They are a great way to keep dirt and mud out of the rest of the house and in one contained room.

Our customers love mud rooms and we always recommend to include them in plans.  We find that anyone with kids loves having a space that dirty clothes and muddy shoes can be dropped w/o disrupting the rest of the home!

Hi Mary, when we built our house we chose a plan that had the 'family' entrance through the garage into the laundry room. I designed a build-in which included a bench with cubbies and hooks. Nice that the shoes and dirty clothing can be left right there and not tracked into the rest of the house.

I wouldn't want to be without a mud room ever again!  The 100 year old home I grew up in had one and the home I live in now has one, but there were too many houses in between these two that didn't.  Mud rooms keep everything so much cleaner.  It also functions as an arctic entry in our cold climate, keeping our kitchen warmer because of the small space between inside and outside.

Hi Debbie - I love the idea of the bench with the cubbies and hooks! It makes wonderful sense to me! I grew up with one and have one at my cabin but not in my home. I sure miss that with everyone coming and going! Thanks for the comment.

Hi Brenda! I am with you on this one! Great to hear from so many people who find these spaces useful! When I started talking about mudrooms a couple of months back there were some who thought I was crazy! What a useful idea and you give some extra reasons "It also functions as an arctic entry in our cold climate, keeping our kitchen warmer because of the small space between inside and outside." Thanks for the comment!

UP with mud rooms...we love them here in Oregon too where the multiple kinds of gear tends to pile up. Best of ideas for keeping up a good shoe-free house which we all know is healthier and most blessedly easier to clean! I like to put pet food  in the built-in cabinets and pet feeding stations nearby when there is a chance to do so.

Hi Paula! Aren't mud rooms great! It sounds like you have many uses for yours. Unfortunately, my house was built without one. What I wouldn't give!!!

Mary--great post.  Yes, I have two mud rooms front and back door mud rooms.  Living in the country with no sidewalks and having a husband who just walks in with muddy boots/shoes it is great place to catch whatever.  They keep the rest of the house a little cleaner and neater.  Yes, modern construction may offer Mud rooms, but the character isn't quite the same.  Thanks for your research.
