Fort Rucker Veterans ParkAs a military spouse have you considered putting your Real Estate career on hold while moving from installation to installation?  Just when you find your niche and you have developed a client base its time to up root! Is it possible to have a successful career in Real Estate when you are moving every three years with the military?

Recently moving to the Fort Rucker / Enterprise Alabama Area from Augusta Georgia, I was reluctant to reciprocate my Real Estate License.  Being a military spouse and the uncertainties of how long we will stick around on this Army installation, I was not sure that I wanted to invest the time or effort (not to mention the dough) into establishing a Real Estate career in Enterprise.  After two short months I interviewed with Walt Wyatt at Realty World Southern Homes & Properties LLC, filled out the Alabama Real Estate Commission Reciprocal Application, paid my dues and joined the Wiregrass Board of Realtors

Now comes the hard part.  I had to develop a business plan that would minimize my marketing cost, become familiar with the Wiregrass area and get acquainted with the market condition.  I began my research on the information highway and to my disappointment I found that there was little information highlighting what Fort Rucker / Enterprise has to offer to the residents of the area.  I also found that marketing efforts were generic and limited.

Meanwhile, I stumbled across Active Rain and became really intrigued by the wealth of information. Level Plains Alabama Water Tower Bingo - this is where I would capitalize on the FREE cost to market myself.  I read and read and read (most of the time staying up until the hubby was waking up to go to PT - physical training for the Army)....took notes and advice from others. I implemented inexpensive marketing ideas from the group marketing for cheapskates.

My next hurdle, to become familiar with the Wiregrass area.  As mentioned above there are very few websites that cover shopping, historical information, events and pictures for Enterprise and the Wiregrass Community.  Cha-Ching for me!  I can now knock out two birds with one stone.  I venture out each day with an empty memory card in my camera, a note pad and a destination unknown.  While out and about learning the area, I document my adventure and snap endless pictures of neighborhood entry ways, water towers, historical markers, churches and shopping plazas.  The second bird - I will turn my adventures into informative blogs to post on Active Rain.

Lastly, the market condition.  Since the MLS provides all the needed information to analyze current and past market history, this is the least challenging. Spending a little time each day to pull different reports will help aid in my quest to understand the market condition for the Wiregrass Area.

The flexibility and opportunity to use my creative side drives me to stay active in my Real Estate Career.  Final conclusion, because I have to move so frequently and learn new areas, I have become a very informative and knowledgeable agent for several different market areas.  "Better known as a Relocation Specialist".

Michelle, Great write! I have never moved to a state that had a reciprocal agreement so it is "start over from scratch". When I moved to California I took all the required classes and after a couple of months I just gave up and went to work in title because I knew I only had 2 years left. If there was a reciprocal I would have been way ahead of the game. There seems to be more cooperation on the east coast and down south then here on the "left coast" :)

JO: Thanks for the comment.  Yes I was grateful and releaved for the reciprocal agreement between GA and AL.  I don't think I would have continued with Real Estate if that was not an option.  My new broker and the other agents have been a great help.  The biggest difference is that AL is "buyer beware" state. I am learning and now have two states under my belt.

Holly cow...how did this happen a featured post?  I was shocked, my husband looked at me as though I was crazy so I had to post a comment on my own post to express "how tickled" I am!  Thanks to whomever makes this happen.

Thank goodness for "portable" careers!  Even though you have to learn the community just think of the new population of buyers!!  When you get bored it will be time to head out.  Gotta love the military life.......Best of luck!!

Linda:  That is so true that real estate is a portable career. I love meeting new people (it must come from my entire life has been nothing but the military).  I am very thankful for having an outgoing personality.  I always keep in contact with past clients and let them know I still can help with their real estate transactions even if I am not local.

Marie: Thank you for encouragement!  I do miss the opportunity that Blanchard and Calhoun offered for CE classes.  In this area I will have to drive several hundred miles to attend any classes.  How is the Localism working out for you?

Best of luck.

Moving from market to market must be tough, though being a military spouse is twice as tough! I saw what I put my wife through after 22 years in the Navy and I believe that experience alone helps her conquer mountains as a teacher in todays world. Thank you and and your family for your service!

Mike selling Beaufort: Being a military spouse is challenging!  Growing as a military child, I am well equipped to adapt to the military PCS moves.  I have learned so much over the years and I enjoy seeing other parts of the world.  I am sure your wife makes a wonderful, diverse teacher.  Thank you for stopping in and leaving words of kindness.

Great job Michelle, the military teaches flexibility :-)  Your positive attitude and willingness to learn about your new community will pay off in many ways in the future. After serving 20 yrs in the Army, I have a unique understanding that serving is truly a family affair, and anyone who can take the stress out of a PCS move is a special person :-)

Thanks for your insight and message.  I'm fortunate to have an Army and Air Force base with in 15 minutes of my office and many of my clients and friends have served,

Michelle, you've figured out how to adapt and that's a good thing. Serving a military community myself (Fort Bragg, North Carolina) I understand the challenges PCS moves present to families. Also I have first hand experience, having served many years as a soldier and still serving as a civilian. The one thing we have to be thankful for is the economic stability the military brings to our local communities.

Clark in Fort Bragg:  The military lifestyle has given me the opportunity to be a free spirit and adaptive to my surroundings.  My father served in the US Navy and relocation has always been a way of life.  I enjoy meeting new people, helping military families relocate to new installation and I look forward for our tri-annual US Army PCS move.  I agree the job security the military provides for the service men aid the prosperity in local communities near military post / base.  Best of luck with your Fort Bragg Relocations.

I know your pain, married to a 18yr Navy Guy, I have been licensed in California, Illinois, and now Virginia.  With each move you have to start from scratch. Including the non reciprocal license from Cali to Illinois.  Getting to know the new area was always hard until they came out with GPS, then I could toss my paper map.

Michelle,   Investing in the reciprocal license was the best thing you could have done.  The military community is getting smaller all the time.  Networking with wives and staying in touch with old clients will also give your business a shot in the arm.

I not so recently was the purchasing agent in a transaction, here in Columbus Ga.  The Seller was a military wife who had a real estate license from Pennsylvania.  We spoke briefly and I encouraged her to make her Ga license.  Well 6 months after we closed another AR member contacted me here, to remind me that I sold her house and she is now a Realtor in Savannah Ga.

I enjoy picture blogs here and post a lot of pictures to Localism.  Good Luck selling Enterprise.

Wow! You are awesome! I'm really proud of you for getting out there and doing it. You didn't allow the move of the military life to stop you from helping those who need YOU! I am from Ozark and I understand what you mean when there isn't much but you can find so much when you do just as you did by getting in your car with an empty card and taking those pics.  Many of us have been to Ft. Rucker at least once in our Military life and it is so nice to see pictures of my home town.

Thank you and blessings to you this year!  I'm at Ft. Campbell, KY. We retired here this month. So, if you have any clients coming to Campbell and if I have any coming to Rucker, I will contact you.
