6 Tips for Designing a Perfect Home Fitness Center

As quarantine continues, it's no surprise that home gyms are seen as increasingly attractive amenities. Designing a home gym can be the perfect next step in your fitness journey. If you're set in your routine and like to work out from the comfort of your own home, carving out that space for yourself could be a great investment.

There are a few ways that you can use your time and money wisely to make the most effective and functional space for you. You deserve a home fitness center that works with your needs, and designing it intentionally can help you get there.

1. Give Yourself Space

While you don't need a giant cove, putting yourself in a tiny closet won't allow room for movement and activity. Feeling cramped can make you feel unmotivated and less likely to enjoy your workouts, so if you are in a small space it's important to make it feel breathable and spacious by avoiding clutter and keeping some of your area clear for movement.

2. Make It Inviting

Bright colors, lots of light and comfortable room to move around are all elements that make your home fitness space motivating and inviting. While you should be careful not to choose fashion over function, including little joyful elements in your space that make you happy to return to your workouts day after day will pay off in the long run.

3. Pick the Right Flooring

When renovating for a home gym, the flooring is one of the most important functional elements. Carpeting and hardwood can make a space feel too much like a bedroom or any other room in your home, not a space distinctly dedicated to fitness. Traditional flooring can also feel uncomfortable during your workouts or get damaged by gym equipment and exercise.

Finding a floor that's intended for working out is crucial for the effectiveness of your space. You can even find flooring options that protect the floor underneath so you don't cause damage or harm the resale value should you decide to convert your space back later.

4. Pick the Right Equipment

When choosing your supplies and equipment, it's important to approach with tact and care. Gym equipment is an investment, especially because you're likely more limited in your space and budget than a public fitness center. If you go to a gym in person, take stock of the equipment you use the most and whether those exercises could be replicated without it.

Finding the right equipment for your space and your routine is crucial in motivating you to use the home gym you've created. If you're sure of what you want, go with it.

5. Keep It Minimal

Beyond knowing what you need, it's important to know what you don't need. Cluttering your space with equipment you don't need or use can limit your mobility within the space and waste your money.

It's easy to convince yourself that spending money on equipment will make you more likely to use it, when in fact the opposite is true — in that you should consider investing money in something if you know already that it'll be of use to you. When filling your home gym, it's best to start small with only the things you know you need.

6. Pump Up the Jams

When you work out at a traditional gym, headphones or earbuds are a must if you enjoy listening to music or podcasts. However, in your home gym, you don't need to keep quiet. Taking advantage of your sound opportunities can make a home gym feel truly your own. Finding a speaker or sound system can elevate your space so you can enjoy the music you love while you work out. Even if you simply invest in a small portable speaker, it can make all the difference in your home gym.

Whether you're starting from scratch or going through a renovation, designing your home fitness center with intention and specificity can meet your needs that much better, so you can reach your fitness goals from home.
