Ellison Harvie was born in Prahran, Melbourne, Australia back in 1902 to Robert and Alice. She graduated from the Warwick School for girls in East Malvern. After graduation, she studied at Swinburne Technical College. She travelled to Europe to further her knowledge returning to Australia in 1925.
After her return, she attended the University of Melbourne until 1928. In 1927, she won both the University of Melbourne’s Atelier award and the President’s Prize for best student work. She worked for Stephenson & Meldrum’s firm where she remained for the rest of her career. She died in East Melbourne, Victoria in 1984, she was 82.
What you may not know about Ellison is that in 1938, she became the first Australian woman to graduate with a Diploma of Architectural Design. Four years later she became the first woman elected to an Australian Architectural Institute as well as the first female Fellow of the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects in 1946. That same year, she became the first Australian woman to become a partner in a large firm. Her specialty was the design of hospitals.
