Over 50 racers from 8 years old and up learn "The Thrill Of The Hill" this weekend. Race starts at 8am on Derby Hill...a specially engineered race course designed after the world series of racing event in Akron Ohio!
Over 60 volunteers and proud excited parents and racers make the event a fun family event in Houlton Maine! Trial runs and tech day start Friday June 20th at 3pm. Plan to see the event...racers are paired off according to a lottery pick for "heats" and race each other twice, changing lanes and wheels after each phase of the heat. The overall best time winner of the two phases...A & B advances to the next bracket on the heat sheet. Top eight racers in stock class (racer and car total weight 200 pounds) and super stock (racer and car total weight 230 pounds) have a race within a race off and top finisher represents Northern Maine in Akron the end of July. Funds to get the family and car to Ohio part of the win and a trophy, savings bonds and tons of local merchant goodies to make the Champ feel pretty special. Get involved in soap box derby racing in your town...its a NASCAR event...gravity racing...your weight, added weight, aerodynamics and a lot of drive luck make the event exciting. Average speed 27 miles and hour and up...just the wind, cheers and the occassional squirrel that crosses the track. Not any suspension either...just the rolling sound of wheels and out of the corner of your eye...the racer you are paired off with as you pick up speed heading to the electronic timer. Races are decided by a thousandths of a second in most cases. All cars are identical part wise but careful alignment, weight placement and about a zillion other factors driver and their mechanic (Dad, Mom, Gramps, Uncle Bob, former racer older brother or sister) decide a strategy on.
