Saturday's Magic Trick - Oh Dear, Oh Deer

Rural Gardening - Now you see it, now you don't. A Disappearing Act

This spring, I (Debb) transplanted a wild geranium to a sunnier spot in one of our backyard gardens. It has been growing nicely and we were looking forward to the blooms.

We know deer will sometimes eat the blooms, and on occasion, they might also nibble at the foliage. Apparently, this young deer failed to get the memo.

As you see in the video, he wasn't deterred when I banged on the window to let him know he wasn't alone. Bernie says it's obvious the local wildlife have my number.

At least he left a few leaves!

Oh dear, oh deer.

Gardening in rural locations requires a lot patience, and at times, a willingness to forgive and forget - or come up with a plan. It's important to know the best locations for planting. The likely solution will involved transplanting this little wild geranium to one of the gardens inside our fenced yard.

Hello Debb and Bernie - I think .  the deer "knows" you're looking.   You're right, sometimes it is best to forgive and forget.  Plan for the best but realize the best may need to wait. . .

Sharon Lee It can be frustrating at times, although, I think in our case, since I have fenced areas, it's kinder for me to move the plants they seem to want to eat.

You and I live in the same back yard...the deer are eveywhere in my area, and creative fencing is the key.

Hahaha, I'm so glad you shared your story, Endre Barath, Jr.  My dad, who hunted, brought a deer home when I was a little girl. I kept crying and asking him why he wanted to kill Bambi's family. Poor dad...and, I don't eat meat from four-legged critters either. I will eat it, if it flies or swims.

Oh Debb- I can't resist feeding any animal (well...maybe snakes) When we were in Leesburg, VA we had deer all around us. One day I planted one of my favorite s...caladiums. By the next morning the deer had eaten every single one of them.

We are in an urban area but we still have deer. Some of our blooms have been clipped.

I think you should rototill a very large area and plant geraniums or whatever they like best..... you'll have generations of families of deer in your yard.... Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD

Yea, snakes are a different story. And flies and cockroaches. :)  Argh.  They sure can wipe out a flower garden in no time.  Caladiums must have been one of their favorites too, Kathy Streib  :)

Yep, they do tend to nibble on things, Roy Kelley.  You can always tell when the deer have paid a visit.

I have often been amazed at how wildlife sometimes becomes so accustomed to our being nearby that they simply ignore us.  That's a nice photo, Debb!

Debb and Bernie:

I saw your video on YT before I got to your post. Deer certainly can be pretty destructive with their appetites. I loved the look that deer gave you when you banged on the window!

My Mom used to get multiple deer in her rural yard and they devoured the roses, among other things.

Jeff

Hi Debb,
Sure, you could have run the deer off but do you think he wouldn't have come back when you weren't looking?

The deer have clipped most of our daylily blooms that are ourside of our fence.

Take care, be safe and have a great day.
