Is gray here to stay?

By

Who knows!  Do you really think I can see the future?  Do you think my crystal ball is better than yours?

Anyway, here's what I do know.

Gray has been on the rise for the last decade. And, it's been growing exponentially.

I started to really notice that gray hardwood floors started to become very popular and frequently requested in 2013.  That year, we got lots of request to sand & refinish hardwood and make them gray.

Almost no one seemed to know how to do it...or at least how to do it correctly.  That was when I wrote my first blog post on the topic. And, I started to get lots of phone calls on this. They were from people all across the country as well as from contractors seeking advice.

A year or two later, the calls shifted to, "my contractor has no idea what he's doing blah blah blah" or my gray floors turned yellow (because they obviously used the wrong type of polyurethane.  (Hint: the answer is to use Bona Traffic HD).

Then we started to see more and more variations on prefinished gray hardwood floors. We saw different colors, finishes, textures and styles. They have been multiplying like rabbits.

Of course gray is even more popular in tile. Slowly carpeting started to gravitate towards gray.  And then we would see grays and whitewashes in luxury vinyl, laminate and virtually every other variation of flooring.

Of course we all know that gray has been popular in paint for even longer, and I believe it was around 2017 when it became the #1 color...surpassing white.  It keeps growing and evolving.

Now warmer grays seem to be more popular than cooler grays. And, now people are having fun with wild and bright accent colors.  Colors like fuschia or bright yellow. It's fun to watch.

What I also know is that when it comes to kitchen, white is the most popular cabinet color and white countertops are most popular, especially ones that look like Calacatta Marble (i.e. white with gray veins or highlights.

And, when it comes to kitchen hardware, brushed nickel is most popular.

And, what about appliances? You guessed it - stainless steel.

So all road lead to gray.

Do I think gray is here to stay?  You betcha.

At least it will be here for a while.

And, of course it's fun for designers to say it's on the way out or magazines to say it's so last decade. It's just like they say blogging is dead.

I would beg to differ on both of those.

Oh course it won't be here forever.  But my guess is that it's here for at least another decade.

Could I be wrong?  Of course!

Hi Debbie... in my life grey is here to stay... then again... I've had grey for 40+ years... back in the late 1970's I stained my floors grey and had grey upholstery and even a custom-made dining table in grey.

You have been ahead of your time.  But, I think you were here in NY before so that helps.  (I love Charlotte, BTW).  I've only been there once, but the people are awesome.

I see a lot of the warmer tones of grey here. And that pop of color you mentioned.

Yes, warmer grays are more stylish now (and better for selling homes as they are more inviting).

Hello Debbie - gray(and grey too I imagine) seem to have been a part of the debate for some time. I appreciate your fact-filled post with its information with dates and notes of progress combined with your actual experience.

Could you be wrong?  Of course, as we know, things happen that can throw them off course but your ongoing research is far beyond just anecdotal.

Michael - Yes, gray for US and grey for Canada!  They both look the same on the walls.

Hi Debbie- I love the greys and while I like the ones with warmer undertones, I've also seen some greys with blue or silver undertones that I like. I agree that grey will be here for a while.

People and designers get fickle thinking they should change or pick something different just because. But classics are just that because they look great for a long time.

I can remember several years ago when people were saying that stainless steel appliances were out.

Gray floors seem very popular right now but I don't care for them...I'm more of a tradtionalist! At first I thought you were referring to gray hair!

Kathy - Yes, gray is very versatile so it has a lot of staying power Oh and I know what you mean on the appliances.

Mary - LOL I have a friend who blogs about that and does really well!  I meant for home decor.  I think gray paint and stainless steel. I think those are more practical than gray hardwood.

Honestly - I thought that you were blogging about how all of us have grey roots showing  I think my gray is here  permanently because hair salons are not opening in the DC area yet. .... and then I will have to wait to get a hair appointment!

We changed to stainless steel appliances but Dolores does not like the gray that is showing in her hair and is anxious to be able to have her hair done.

I have to agree with you. I don't see gray leaving any time soon.

It is funny...when I read your title my mind went immediately to hair. Many of us are dealing with the issue of gray roots during these Covid times. Many of us are making the decision that this just may be the perfect time to give up the coloring of said roots. It is the perfect time for those of us still living in a quarantine state to endure the painful growing out process. I'm going to see just how long I can go and hopefully giving up color for good. Stay tuned to see how that turns out. LOL

Diane - So glad you agree. I used to have a gray cat, too. Now I have 2 black ones, and they are super awesome.

Kathy - Oh thank you so much. I'm honored.

Lise Howe too funny.  On that topic, one of my friends has a whole blog on that and it's really grown in traffic over last 3 months.  They are closed here, too. But, root touch up works (I order from Amazon as I can't get it with grocery deliveries).

Hi Debbie Gartner, when I saw the word "gray", I thought of my hair as well. Luckily, I was able to get in as soon as they re-opened. I liked gray even when it wasn't in, it's a soothing color for me and elegant.

I think it's time for gray to take a hike!  I've hated it since the 80s when the carpet choices were gray or mauve.  I chose gray for my house but thought it was really depressing.

Interesting read, Debbie. I see gray in houses all the time, particularly the flooring. And it's popular in the model homes of new communities, too!

Hi Debbie Gartner

Personally I'm ok with Greyer cabinets but I'm tired of grey walls and have never liked grey floors. So I guess I'm not trendy and that would be for my house. For others houses I say go for what is trendy
