My father-in law asked me to share with you all, a way in which we can fight back against the high price of oil. He was told of an effort being waged by consumers today to force the oil companies to lower their prices. Before I begin I am all about free markets and supply and demand. The government no matter who is in office won't do what needs to be done to curtail oil prices by encouraging other alternative solutions there is too much at stake for them to really intervene. Sure they have these pathetic photo op hearings they bring the heads of these giant oil companies slap the top of their hands while the cameras are rolling and then slap a high five once there off. I'm sorry for my brief moment of cynicism but there is hope, and what I am about to share may be the temporary solution to this problem. The good news is that alternative fuels now have a foothold to be further developed as oil is no longer the cheaper alternative.

So what can we do as consumers to fight back? Some have suggested that we not buy gas for one day. That wont have an impact and it's just unrealistic to think that everyone will be able to do so, and do it on that specific day. Not going to happen. The following was sent to me as a possible and more importantly doable and practical solution to this. This may be the way to remove our necks from the noose the gas hose has around it choking the life out of our pocketbooks!

" Please read on and join with us!

By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $2.00 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $4.29 for regular unleaded in my town. Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50 - $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that

BUYERS control the marketplace. .. Not the Sellers! With the price of gasoline going up more each day, WE, THE CONSUMERS, MUST TAKE ACTION!

The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.

How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the PLAN: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. And under no circumstances buy from CITCO. (CITGO is owned by Hugo Chavez, the dictator of Venezuela, and an enemy of the US) If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.

But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do! Now, don't wimp out on me at this point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

If each of us send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ... And those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000)...and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth group of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers. If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted!

If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!! Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all!

Please, do it now!!! If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send this to 10 people.... I am a mathematician. So trust me on this one.

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days !!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. I suggest that we not buy from EXXON/MOBIL UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $2.00 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK. We may have to hit SHELL & BP too! But let's send a message to Mobil/Exxon First! Remember, they are the ones that brag about their $40,000,000, 000.00 PROFIT LAST YEAR. Friends, That's FORTY BILLION OF OUR AMERICAN DOLLARS! It's TRUE; one of the American Dreams is to have a profitable business. However, Energy is the blood of the American economy. For this company to destroy our economy and put the hardship on its fellow citizens is just UN-AMERICAN and pure simple GREED! This is totally unacceptable!

What do you think? Will you TAKE ACTION to "pass it on Do you have a better idea? Or will you just grin and bear it? Let's give this a try and see what happens?

Unfortunately, although we all want to fight back on not paying so much for gas, I don't think that plan will help any of us. In fact, if we did that, then they would probably raise their prices because they want to make just as much money as they did last year. And if they raise their prices, so will everyone else because they know that we have to pay it. There are only two things we can do. Make it so our cars don't run on oil, or have the government come in and put a cap on how much gas can cost.

You do realize that the oil companies are primarily owned by OPEC, right. They have a reason for driving up prices in an election year. We have a presidential nominee who was raised as a muslim. Do you think they want him in office?

The theory may make people feel better but in reality they most likely won't notice a savings.  In Connecticut our electric company hit us with over a 50% increase about 18 months ago...  Now since many people have gone into conserve mode the utility put in for another rate increase because their profit margin is down...

I am open for more suggestions to send a message to our vendors, the oil companies but, we should restate our actions in a "do" form not in a "do not" fashion. We must state our actions in the positive. For example, Lets all buy gas from Shell only. Or lets all personally ration ourselves to only x dollars per week and then only spend it at X fuel company. If a passive movement is to be successful than it should be stated in the positive in order to create passion for its success.

Hi Steve Dawson,

Thanks for your input, and you may be right.  I do agree we "Make it so our cars don't run on oil" but I don't agree on government intervening. Thanks for your point of view I appreciate it

Hi Elizabeth,

There could be some merit to that, but I think both parties have placed us at the altar of oil greed.

Thanks for your input take care.

Hi Dan,

Wow!  that is certainly not the direction we want to be headed, however you have no other "competing" fuel source in the arena.  We have other gas choices Shell, Exxon, etc... even though they all charge about the same price!.

Thanks Dan for your input something to think about

Hi Steve and Barbara,

That is a great suggestion and will considering changing this post to reflect that later tonight.  It always better to view the gas tank as half full.  Thanks for your input

I'm not sure that everyone would be able or willing to do this (as either a negative or postive).  For example, I food shop at a particular supermarket because I earn points towards gas at a particular gas station.  It's a real savings.  Also, not everyone lives in an area where they have a choice.  If you have to drive too far to get to that station, you are wasting time and gas.  In theory it's a good idea, but in practice, I'm not sure that it would work.

Hi Marie,

I agree, not all of us can participate for various reasons however if the great majority can, we could possibly make an impact?
