Reminiscing about the past, thanks to a quote from a book Diane is reading....

Some of my regular readers are aware that I was born in Communist Hungary and legally immigrated to the United States.

One detail only a few  who know me are aware, why and how we ended up in the United States.

Well let me share the secret. My father was a dreamer, he thought the United States was the "the best country" in the world. He also believed that the streets were paved with Gold and he wanted to be part of the "good life". Keeping in mind my  mother was married to a dreamer, but out of loyalty and love, she stayed with my father.

We learned quickly that life was not as my  father anticipated and we learned to live and struggle as any immigrant who come to the United States.

Diane was aware of all these details and she is reading a book called "The SEVEN or EIGHT DEATHS of STELLA FORTUNA" by Juliet Grames. Knowing the Barath Family history, she brought to my attention this quote that is in this book.

"...I wanted to come to America because I heard the streets were paved with gold. When I got here, I learned Three things: One, the streets weren't paved with gold. Two, the streets weren't pave at all. Three, I was expected to pave them. "Old Italian Story", Ellis Island

I wish I could share this with my mother and father:)))

Wishing you a safe and healthy life and I look forward to your comments.

Hello Endre - our country has many stories similar to yours.  Some are shared in history and in the pages we read in all sorts of ways.   Others remain silent/unspoken/never shared but that does not make them any less real.  I, like many others, am glad your parents and you as their clild showed their courage as they made their way to the United States.

Endre

It has been a while and what an appropriate post to stop by and read. I think many of our parents came with dreams that they found were a bit tougher than they hoped for. My father's parent are from Odessa and my mom's from Ordu, a small Greek village in Turkey. The major difference, both my parents and I were born, only their oldest brothers and sister born in the old country.

Enough of this rambling, hope all else is good, cheers cvc

Hi Endre Barath, Jr. - indeed my great grandfatherd came for the same reasons.  He came with my great grandmother in 1880 because he was not going to live his life for the Kaiser in newly unified and increasingly militaristic Germany.

Endre as you know I also immigrated to the US when I was 8 years old.  The streets were not paved with gold, and my parents worked long hours in factories to provide for us.  But even though the streets were not paved with gold, the BEST country in the world provided us with opportunities we NEVER would have had where we were to make our own gold.

Your story is one of much success Endre and thankfully your parents wanted a better life for themselves and for you. My grandparents came from Bohemia to become Americans, they wanted that so badly. They achieved that, were hard workers and died much too young.
