John Harrison was born in Foulby, Yorkshire, England back in1693. His step father was a carpenter, of course it was expected that John follow in his footsteps. About 1700, the family moved to Lincolnshire, England. In 1713, he built his first longcase clock, every mechanism was made from wood, it is currently on display in the Science Museum in London.
In 1720’s, he was commissioned to make a new turret clock at Brocklesby Park in North Lincolnshire, England. It still works, by the way. In 1730, he set about designing another clock that will forever put him in the history books. It took him five years, when finished he presented his clock to the Royal Society. It was first tested in 1735, during a voyage. His invention was adopted by the Royal Navy. He spent seventeen years developing his third clock. In the end, it was off by 3 seconds in 81 days.
What you may not know about John is that he invented the marine chronometer, which calculated the problem of longitude while at sea.
