It depends where you live, as to the timing of the first day of summer.  In the USA and the rest of the northern hemisphere, summer starts on (June 20th or 21st).  In Europe it's June 21. In Australia it's six months later, on December 21. On this day of the year the Sun is at its north farthest point.
