So I just caught this flick starring Frankie Muniz, Sophia Bush, Jimmi Simpson, Milo Ventimiglia, Samaire Armstrong, and Adam Goldberg on Encore. With this cast of newly famous actors and actresses (with the exception of Muniz, who has been on the scene for awhile) this movie definitely had potential. I remember it being advertised when it opened and the basic premise. The premise is that these college age kids find a Beta copy of a new computer game in an attache bag that is given to one of them from the sister of a recently deceased friend. The game is called...drum roll please...Stay Alive! The kids think that of course the game would be fun. They all assume their online personas and begin to play. Almost immediately it becomes apparent that if your character dies in the game, you will suffer the same fate. There you have the premise!
As with all horror movies there is a necessary suspension of disbelief that must occur to make this film almost work. If the movie can keep your attention then theoretically the suspense builds...to a degree. If this happens then there is usually a payoff; sadly that is not the case with this movie. It falls short of what this talented cast could have delivered. Then again, the script which, was co-wrote by director William Brent Bell, may have been thin at best. Whatever the case, I am glad I saw this for free on Direct TV. If given the opportunity, I would probably not watch it again.
