It seems the importance of knowing how to use the various technologies that go along with protecting your Intellectual Data increases everyday.  As many know from my previous posts I use a product called  Copyscape on a subscription basis the name is Copysentry.

Copysentry works in various ways, it is fee based on how many URLs you would like to protect and how often you would like Copysentry to search for duplicates of your URL.  Subscribing to it is a fairly easy process.  If you would like to check it out go here.  BTW I am not an employee or associate of Copysentry.  I earn no money for this endorsement, as always I share this information to my friends in the Rain.

My weekly report comes to me looking like this.  I will only be sharing a small part of it with you, as the page is very long.

My I have a screen shot please....

Ahh, I see this week there are a few newcomers to the group.  Let's click on the first one to see how much David loves my website:

The next screenshot please:

Notice how the page is highlighted?  Well the highlighted part is where the text matches the text on my site.  Don't you just love the pretty colors?

Obviously David really LOVES me and my site.  How do I know?  Easy, David linked to my site.

To see for yourself click on http://www.davidjwieland.info/

Then look for the heading text that says, "OFFERING MANY CHOICES OF SAGINAW HOMES", where does it take you?

I must admit David did good, at least the Denver was changed to Saginaw, that would be really foolish had he not corrected that mistake!

Isn't this fun?  I just love doing this every week when my CopySentry is delivered to my email box.

Wow! What a lovely site!  Tammy even added additional pages not just the first one! I particularly like the way Tammy blended her colors to match mine.  She even managed to make  my font and colors look good on her cute little site.  Tammy also did a good job of changing all the area names.  She obviously doesn't love me as much as David, no links back to the CREATOR OF THE CONTENT.

PART II ~ Scapebooking

Creating memories is one thing, saving them is another.  I love the digital age where we can save goodies for the future without getting the yucky white paste on my fingers.  I never did like having dirty hands.  Of course if I did get white past on my fingers it would stick to the keyboard...yucky yuck!  Not for me!

To create my digital scrapbook I use a wonderful little program called Onfolio.  If you already own it, never let it go.  Why?  Because Google bought it and it no longer is what is was.  I think Google Gobbled it.  Boo Who :(

So sorry if you are unlucky, I don't mean to be mean.  Just the same this is a lesson in what I do, you can find a way to do the same...

As soon as I find something I want to save, I create a file in Onfolio and save it.  In fact I save it twice.  The first save is SAVING A LINK to the item.  The second save is SAVING THE ORIGINAL TO MY HARD DRIVE.

Why do I do two saves?  Well sometimes people like to take down the things I like to save.  Sorta remove the proof.  hahaha.  By saving it to my hard drive the only way they can remove it is to come to my house and get past my two 125 pound Dobermans.  Enough of that.

Here's a screen shot.   Enjoy!

onfolioOK so I got carried away on the colors with this one.  I was trying to make my blog pretty and fun.

Part III ~ The Dangers of Duplicate Content

Anyone who has a website and cares about it being found is always anxious to get their website indexed by the big G (Google for those of you just born yesterday).

Google has amazing powers and has a very special magic filter that finds "duplicate content."  In order for Google to find duplicate content it has to have content indexed in it's data base right?  I mean if it didn't how would it be DUPLICATE right?

Well oldtimer sites like mine for instance who have been indexed and have been around for ....hummm TEN YEARS have been indexed.

So when another site comes along and decides to hummm "borrow" content from my indexed site, don't you suppose Google would look at the new website as DUPLICATE CONTENT?

OH MY!  That must mean that site that copies would be like a car that was trying to win a race while it was chained to a tree!

NO GO! hahahaha

MORAL OF THE STORY?

Browsing the internet and lifting content from a site anywhere in the  UNIVERSE is not only NOT going to get you noticed but you will be penalized.  By Google, By the person you lifted it from, by society and your mother will swat you over the head for being a brainless dolt.

Part IV ~ How to have a very cool website that brings you business

Sit down, pick up a pen and start writing.  Write everyday for a month.  Think about your area go out, take photos, think about your "perfect" client, write to them, answer their questions.  Address them in the language they understand.  Speak to the person you want to attract.  Most important of all...

BE YOURSELF...Do you own work.

kk

P.S. Hope you learned something today.

Good grief; and Tammy is the "broker in charge" of her office.

It's funny that you should post this tonight because I thought about you today. The NPR program All things considered had a story today on plagiarism. The story was on how there are no original thoughts. Simply by using the same language and the same individual words are are coping each other. Anyway, it was an interesting program, and plagiarism is wrong.

Only if lazy and stupid are felonies Kristal.

You might be able to collect twice as much though; once from ol Tammy personally and again from the brokerage.

Double jeopardy is being tried twice for the same crime; Tammy has committed the same crime in two different personas.

I found an agent in my on office taking the photos off my site like nothing was wrong with it. Her excuse was, I thought you got them off the MLS. It happens. Nice post that may open someones eyes. If they knew the time and effort that we put in. I do not write as well as you so have not to worry.

So, KK, this is neat stuff...well, at least the technology, not the low-lifes who plagiarize. So what are you going to do with these folks? Go the attorney route? Email them? Offer to help them (for a fee) get their site in order? Maybe you should invite them to join AR? We need more plagiarists here.  :(

I used to do a close second to copyscape by quoting something from my website and Googling it.

One of the favorite things people like to lift from my website is my "40 Free or inexpensive tips can make your home show better, sell faster, and put more money in your pocket at closing".

When you Google part of it: "Go through and pack up most of your family pictures and collections of model ships, stamps, quilts, or anything that might cause a buyer to stop" you can usually catch a fish or two.

This is what I wrote from scratch, original content:

"1. Be sure your lawn and shrubbery is kept trimmed at all times. Consider
removing overgrown trees and shrubs that  hide the house from the street.

2. Keep the garage doors down at all times.

3. For a touch of color, have seasonal flowers growing in beds and containers.

4. Make sure your driveway is in good repair. Pressure wash concrete drives
and walks to remove stains and car drippings, and put a fresh coat of
sealer on asphalt drives.

5. Make sure patios and decks are clean and in good repair.  Replace any
rotten wood and nail down loose boards on decking or steps; pressure wash
if needed.

6. Garage sale time! Clear out everything you don't intend to keep and tidy
up what's staying.  Make sure garage doors and openers are in proper
working order."

And from another website:

  • "Be sure your lawn and shrubbery is kept trimmed at all times. Consider removing overgrown trees and shrubs that hide the house from the street.
  • Keep the garage doors down at all times.
  • For a touch of color, have seasonal flowers growing in beds and containers.

Jim ~ That is very sad.  I have a similar story happening with my page called moving list. It is really very generic, but everybody and his brother started copying it, I just gave up.  My descriptions of the areas in Denver has been copied so many times, people copy from the copiers.  One guy even had a picture of my husband on his site.  I staged my hubby to be walking down a path, specifically to put on the site.  The idiot kept telling me it was his copy. He still cracks me up.  How would you like to be his broker? (don't bother to answer, I know the answer!)

Mariana ~ It is unbelievable.  I suspect someone from AR will be letting these folks know.  Of course I will be having a "chat" about it too.

Jeff Dowler ~ Google is working on a new search engine for infringement.  It has to do with spontaneous self-combustion.  I'm not quite sure how it is going to work, but I understand it is very effective.  Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Eric ~ Gosh Eric I thought you took all those gorgeous shots off the  MLS too?  Are you telling me you took time to go do them yourself?  Are you sure all those lovely shots aren't fee stock photography?  :)

Herb ~ If it's not good enough to copy why bother?

    Jennifer ~ you are welcome.

Dena ~ Please see my response to Jeff Dowler. :)

Jeff B. ~ OK did you take Nima's logo?  Nima is the Mortgage Man, I saw him in the Mortgage Man suit, or was that a aaahhh different kind of suit?  :)

KK, there was a reason there were stocks in the town squares when our country started.  The shame of being publicly outed for one's crime was a deterrent.  Since I don't understand why someone would copy something that is not a result of one's own creativity, I find it pathetic that people would copy and make no attempt to make their own content.  Put them in stocks.  List them in the hall of shame.

While in no way do I disagree with your conclusions; I would be *&$%#! about it too. I do think that there is a misconception about "duplicate content" and G. It is true that G gives more weight to a page with unique and original content (content is king) and that someone stealing that content dilutes its value. The G duplicate content penalty that you have heard about is not really related to this.

G's duplicate content penalty is about content that is duplicated within one's own web site. Content that is identical within the web site but can be accessed from 2 different URLs. An example might be a listing that is on one page but has a "printer friendly" version of the same listing on another page within the domain.

    www.mysite.com/123oakstreet.htm

    www.mysite.com/123oakstreetprint.htm

Same content, different URLs same domain.

Just my 2 cents about the big G. ;-)

I had a website main page copied by someone IN MY OWN OFFICE.  If someone was looking through the agents' sites trying to choose one, they'd be just as likely to think I ripped off the other agent, right?  I was FURIOUS.  Did anyone notice I put a Copyscape warning on my page welcoming my office members to Active Rain?  I didn't worry about any Rainers copying off me, but since it's happened in my own office before, I felt a little defensive there.

I don't spend a lot of time tracking text content thieves.  I doubt that my content is that interesting to that many folks anyway.

I do plug in a few "keywords" that I can use to occassionally identify folks who lift content and I keep a record of them.  I check back regularly to make sure they haven't decided to take a map or new home image or other images.

    Image thieves will pay.

    Terry,

It just happened minutes ago, then, because I just had the sublime pleasure of seeing his "Denver Page."

    Kristal,

Good post on copyright I use copyscape myself. It was good to kind of see a little more in depth on what goes on in the world wide web.

    Good Day!!

Personally, I think David needs to man up and drop by with a public apology right here on this post. That's the only way he's going to save any amount of face at this point.

David says in a private email:

    From: David
    Email: djwieland@charter.net
    Subject: SOOOO Sorry

    Hi Kristal,

I am very sorry about the copying of your website. I asked my assistant to make up a site for me. I will be having a long talk with her tmr. I have taken off the internet and It will be changed ASAP. Again, I am very sorry for that and thank you for bringing it to my attention. Enjoy your day!

Was that a serious apology or a smoke screen? Seems pretty easy to point the finger at the assistant while pleading innocence in this case. I'm all for giving someone the benefit of the doubt but really...

Why would you leave something as important as the copy on your website up to an assistant without, at the very least, looking it over to say yea or nay? I mean, this is *your* presence on the Internet after all. Wouldn't you do everything in your power to make sure that it shows you in the best possible light? You certainly would if it was print advertising so why not with Internet advertising?

At any rate, nice detective work Kristal. And good advice to save a snapshot of the offending site while it still is the offending site. Without that bit of evidence once they take it down you'd have a tough time proving it was ever there. That's good thinking.

    Thanks for the good read.

Don ~ you are welcome, this was meant to be a training post on oh so many levels.

Jeff ~ So what did you do with Nima?  You could wear a Zorro costume and write mortgages with a sword...overkill probably. Really though guess you haven't been reading the posts about branding in the comments.

Randy ~ So did you mind? LOL!  Another brainless human.

Louis ~ I hear you.  Thanks for the tip...2 Cents that is.

Leanne ~ Actually the going line is "my assistant did it."  One day I will hear "my broker made me do it."

Jay the Codgerguy ~ Vigilante?  I think not. This is a learning experience with examples.  Many people love me.  That's why they copy me.  :)

Maureen Francis & DK ~ My power is being saved for special purposes.

Linda ~ Carnac is oh so right, special kind of stupid indeed.  We have outstanding commentors here in the rain.

Sarah ~ Why use your brain when you can get it for free?  You should put ants in their drawers (at work).  hahaha

Dan Cummings ~ Ouch! You are quite the slogan coiner!  Somehow my instinct tells me you should stick with real estate.  :)

Cynthia ~ I'm sure you will do a bang up job of using your own voice to develop your own website.  Glad to set an example.

Lysa ~ No.  Photos are .jpg or .gif.  There is a service you can subscribe to that will "tag" your photos and trace them if someone lifts them off the page.  There is also code you can add to the HTML of the page that will disallow a "right click."  It only works for the people who don't know how to get around it. A tech savvy person will know how to download an entire site if they want and steal the whole thing, code, keywords, photos, content, design etc.

Diane ~ learning new things is good! I hope.

Ann ~  I hope you have not been copied, but with your track record of writing, I would bet money you have been copied too.  Copyscape is a very handy tool to have in your toolbox.

Monika the teacher lady ~ thanks, good luck with your copyscape endeavors.

Joan ~ Cyberthieves are nasty.  Right clicking is just too easy to do.  Too bad they don't understand how easy it is to get caught.

Don ~ I hate having to do this, but maybe it will deter others.

Lenn ~ Oh Lenn, don't cut yourself short.  Content thieves are probably more prevalent than map thieves.  Map thieves actually make my blood boil quicker and at a higher temperature.

Ryan ~ I beg your pardon!  Me sarcastic?  What ever gave you that idea?

    Kaye ~ Please don't insult dirt. :)

    David Love ~ I agree.

    Christy ~ Nerve?  I guess.

Jennifer ~ You are welcome.  I hope you don't need to address it.

Sharon ~ LOL I love when they copy my misspellings and bad punctuation.  It's even better when they link back to the source.  Cracks me up.

JaneAnne ~ Pilferpeople that's what they are!  Tar and feathering sounds good to me. Would that be the green way to do it? :)

Gail ~ I will need to research the name of the company that will track your photos for you.  You do need to make a CD of your photos and send it to the U.S. Copyright office to register them.  After that sit back and wait for someone to take your photo.  The fines buy a ton of very nice shoes from Nordstroms.  (not the sale kind)  I will blog on this further.

Mike ~ how kind and generous of you.  Some people just don't have the time to gather their own.

    Patricia ~ You are welcome.

Terry ~ Oh I'm sure he was tipped off by someone here on AR.  I expected nothing less.  Of course I also sent him an email, the subject was "Cease and Desist".  It worked.

Mike ~ Do you think the new page will link back to me?  :)

Duayne ~ Good Day to you too!

Ryan ~ Don't hold your breath.

Jerry ~ Always save the snapshot first.  It's way to easy to change something and deny it ever existed.  As per the apology being serious...who am I to judge?

Kristal, Thank you, I do know about the right click codes, but as you said there are tech savy people out there that can get around it, and adding water marks etc to photos just takes away from them. Do you know what service to look for that will track photo's if they are lifted or what key words I should use to search for one? I do love Copyscape, I did try it out and caught myself btw, it worked! Thanks again! Have a great day!

Ok....now I read about half the post because I just had to ask a question...

If I were to type into my site..."Are you considering a move and want to purchase a new home?"...your system is going to say I am copying you?

How many agents have that line in their advertising and website....ummmmmm...probably EVERY ONE OF THEM!

I guess I will have to go back and read the rest tomorrow when I have more time but I really didn't get this.  Oh....I guess ad me to the copy list because I am sure that I probably have the wording somewhere either on my ads or my site...

KK... what do you do once you find stolen content?

I know you can sue... but is it worth it? What really can you get?

    Curious?

I didn't read everyone's comment so I don't know if someone mentioned this.  Since Kristal mentioned Onfolio is not what it was, there are other ways to easily save a site to your hard drive.  The easiest is to select "Save As" from the "File" menu, then select "webpage complete".  This will save the page and graphics to your hard drive.

Ben ~ Thanks for adding that info.  No one did so prior to you.

William ~ Glad to help.  The service is outstanding and unfortunately very needed.

Kristal,  I thought it was enough to put your name and copyright on the pic.  Please do a post on this.  I need to learn more.  Thanks.

Kristal, amazing information in the field of plagiarism. To be original, just write and don't read or cut and paste from anyone else unless you reference them. Those colors you provided were amazing. But then again if you can't think, copying is so much easier. I know it ticks you off.

Kristal: This is an amazing explanation of Copyscape/Copysentry. Will all the talk going around AR right now, I thought this should be brought up to the top of the list again. Thank you for the very clear explanation.

Thank you for the information.  I found one of my little blogs under someone elses name recently.  I didn't think that I had very much to say or rather it couldn't be of much value.

Apparently I was wrong because I feel like someone stole something out of my house!  A real violation.

    Thanks again.
