Are You Driving With The Handbrake On?

By

Unsuccessful people often feel anxious. Why is that? They think anxiety is because they haven’t got the life they want. What’s funny is it’s the other way around. Anxiety is a “state” of emotion which clouds the mind and makes sound judgment almost impossible. Misunderstanding anxiety is what is holding back so many. When you are free of anxiety improvements in all areas of life can begin.

Arthur Somers Roche said “Anxiety is a thin stream of fear trickling through the mind. If encouraged, it cuts a channel into which all other thoughts are drained.” William James said “The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.”

In today’s world there is so much SHOUTING trying to vie for your ear which contributes to mounting anxiety. The bolder the opinion the more people listen but in turn the more these opinions should be questioned. Many have become immobilized with fear and are driving with the handbrake on. They are questioning their every move, every decision and are not moving forward prospering in the new norm with all its challenges. I’ve made a conscious effort to tune out the noise and concentrate on what I can change and contribute to what I feel is meaningful.

Walking in the morning at the track at Canyon Creek Elementary clears my head and allows me to put events bombarding me into perspective. I rarely listen to the news and if I do I try and listen to different opinions to form my own conclusions (research and verify). It’s easy to REACT negatively to the SHOUTING but I’m reminded of what Deepak Chopra said, “Every time you are tempted to react in the same old way, ask if you want to be a prisoner of the past or a pioneer of the future.”

Every business model is going through transformations and ours is not an exception. More than ever consumers want to listen to someone who is a trusted resource. People are moving, relocating or need a change in their living accommodations because their home is now used for work, school and a gym! They need help from a Real Estate professional who can guide them through the process and give them relevant, rational and practical advice.

In order to effectively help I know I need to be the voice of reason, exhibit a positive outlook and genuinely care about serving my clients. This is the easiest thing I do and have fun doing it! Treating others with kindness and respect, while serving our clients best interest, is a great way to build mutual respect and client loyalty.

Grenville Kleiser said it best: “Good humor is a tonic for mind and body. It’s the best antidote for anxiety and depression. It is a business asset. It attracts and keeps friends. It lightens human burdens. It is the direct route to serenity and contentment.”

Good morning, Dorie.
I love everything about this post. Thank you!

For me, humor is probably the main thing that has kept me sane throughout my life.  Now, more than ever I've had to tune out a lot of the noise. It WAS creating anxiety and uncertainty and that's not how I choose to live.  I will do what I can and figure out how to deal with what I can't control.

Thanks again for the thoughtful post.

Hello Dorie Dillard CRS GRI ABR

Oh boy - tuning out the noise and quieting the mind is a daily practice for me.

Walking is a wonderful tool to just be with nature and let the mind be one outside of the noise of daily life.  I use meditation a lot ... it's been a true blessing for me to remain grounded.

Congratulations on the Feature! 💙💛

I was at the site when Tesla autonomous car hit a city bus. The spokesperson mentioned they will twig the software. The rider got a ticket since he was supposed to apply hand brakes or take over driving in manual mode.

Hi Dorie:

This is such excellent advice. It's a great analogy and a well deserved feature. There certainly IS a lot of noise these days, isn't there? And it's easy to get not only distracted but emotional!

Listening, conversing with others is such a pleasure, especially these days. I am amazed how often people interuppt others--seems to be a habit for some.  Every week I make a point to meet someone for conversation outdoors somewhere--friend, collegue--to talk about what's happening.  It's important to be social and not stagnate at home.
