William Jefferson Hunsaker was born in Contra Costa County, California back in 1855 to Nicholas and Lois. The family moved to San Diego in 1869, where his father served as the 10th sheriff of San Diego County. When he was 16 he began to learn the printers trade for the San Diego Bulletin.
Later he trained as a lawyer, in 1876 he was admitted to the bat. He ran and was elected as the San Diego District Attorney. In 1887, he ran for mayor, he served in that capacity, however he ran into opposition from the city council which was dominated by members of the opposite party. He resigned a year later. In1901, he was elected to the “junior vice-president of the Los Angeles Bar Association. He was elected as vice-president of the American Bar Association in 1904. In 1911, he was elected to the California Bar Association. He died in 1933, he was 77.
What you may not know about William is that in 1881, he defended someone everyone should know from murder charges on a gunfight at the O.K. Corral, Wyatt Earp. When Earp died he was one of the pall-bearers.
