The other day we were networking at one of our favorite
Starbucks Vancouver locations and were talking on the topic of how earth
friendly, green living
has been working its way into the real estate and
building industry. Of course the three Big “R’s” of the Green Movement are
Reduce; Re-Use, and Recycle. So we discussed how we ourselves are being
green right that moment at Starbucks. During that we came with a few more Starbucks related R’s
to add to the basic three R’s mentioned above.
To Reduce we often bring our own mug or order our beverage
and request a porcelain cup, which reduces the need for a paper cup. We
wondered how much difference that could make, and read
from
AboutMyPlanet.com that 16 Billion paper cups are used for coffee each year
in the USA. That equals about 6.5 million trees each year! On top of that, the
paper coffee cups are coated with plastic thus, making them non-recyclable.
Our big thumbs-up to those of you that will join us in using our own
Re-Usable mugs or the Starbucks Re-Usable porcelain cups and
Reduce the use of paper coffee cups!
We should also mention that Starbucks will give you a
discount for bringing your own mug – that doesn’t rate as one of the R’s but
perhaps worth letting you know!
As for
Recycling, Starbucks is well known for saving up their spent coffee grounds
and making them freely available to gardeners to use for composting and soil
improvement. We’ll be getting another bag next week.
OK now that covers the basic 3 R’s. To get more R's we must delve into
the subtleties of the
Starbucks Card. For the 4th R,
Register Your Card! When you do so before July 14, 2008 you will be (5th
R) Rewarded with a free beverage coupon. There may be other rewards
coming up as w
ell.
Here are some of the other benefits of Registering your own card: If the card is
lost or stolen, when you promptly report it they will send you (6th
R) a Replacement. While networking and drinking coffee, when using your
Registered Card your (7th R) Refills (recommend you use your
own mug!) are Free! When the value on your card runs down, you can (8th
R) Reload it with more value (fork over the other Green), and Re-Use the
card over and over.
Whew! There were more R's at Starbucks than we thought! Now we can (9th R)
Relax and enjoy the (10th R) Rejuvenating feeling of our hot morning
coffee ...
