39 Comments on Off-shore oil drilling, President Bush & Congress, and other oxy-morons ....
As long as Americans continue to elect dishonest presidents who are willing to lie to Congress and to the people about policy decisions and the intent behind them, we'll keep on having these problems. Bush has been consistently arrogant and has demonstrated clearly his disrespect and disdain for the American public.
He's always acted like he's above the law in a reckless, carless manner. (Remember "Bring 'em on"?)

Simon, it is impossible for the Bush haters to have anything positive to say about anyone who is proud of their country.
Jane - I think I'll also donate again today ... thanks for the reminder.
Hugh - I am proud of my country - it's certain politicians and their actions (and inactions) that embarrass me. Patriotism has nothing to do with likeing or disliking George Bush.
I love my country. I also believe Bush is doing what he thinks is the right thing to do. I also believe that he feels that way because he is a fundamentalist nut job and there is no bigger argument for a seperation of church and state than his Presidency.
Israel - you see I can accept your argument completely. I don't agree with it and that is OK, but I can accept it. I would hate to believe that any President was not a person of honor. Also I have no problem with the seperation of church and State as long as it doesn't reach crazy extremes - like "The Deocration Task Force" in denver last year - running round making sure that no city decoration had any religious connotation. That is simply nuts.
Simon- I am with you on that. I don't think being religious is a bad thing. Just in it's appropriate place. Like people getting mad that the ten commandemnts are not in the court house. The ten commandments are not laws. That display makes non-Christians feel like they are not getting a fair shake. I approve of a minute of silence to start the school day. That way, religious kids can pray and kids who aren't can think about whatever is on their mind.
Guilty... of being a BH but I did stand behind him for a brief moment in time, hopeing that he was telling the truth. Now we know it was all lies. What a mess we have here

What is a "Deocration Task Force in Denver" I never heard of that!!
Dido on your comments Simon. I appreciate your patriotism. Like him or hate him, George Bush was the right man for the job during these testing times after 9/11. We don't need a leader that appeases the masses for the sake of popularity. There are many individuals who believe in appeasement and will say anything just to get a vote.
GW and the majority of conservatives have pushed for domestic drilling of oil since the 80's. Something that the leftist liberals have adamantly rejected (for their own hidden agendas) and got support from left leaning democrats over the years. No initiative has ever been pushed for the sake of partisanship until now. That's politics 101. Give some and take some when convenient. Thank God our current President didn't compromise the security of our nation although many have tried to play politics with that.
Jane - it was in fact Fort Collins, CO - the city set up a group - paid for with your tax dollars no doubt - called "The Decoration Task Force". Their job was to make sure that no official city display at Christmas time had any religious connotation.
From NBC's 9 News last November:
"We have to be careful that the displays that we have not endorse any particular religion. Putting things in a multicultural context, or an educational context really helps us be very safely on the good side of the First Amendment," said Seth Anthony, a spokesman for the Task Force who is an ACLU member.
That said, Anthony adds Christmas would not be absent from Fort Collins if the recommendations were to pass. He says they would not prohibit Christmas trees or decorations inside public buildings and businesses would still throw up all sorts of Christmas displays."
I did not realize that Governor Crist had changed his position on this issue. I thought that during his campaign he was adamantly opposed to drilling off Florida's coast not because it was unsightly but because of concerns over possible oil spills effecting the beaches.
Rich - I'm trying to find some information where Governor Crist has changed his mind. Do you know of any sites I can visit?
"Last year, Crist had urged federal lawmakers to reject legislation, which they did, that would have allowed drilling as close as 45 miles off Florida's beaches. He also supported the ban during his 2006 campaign for governor" - AP

I know it is a very unpopular opinion, but I don't want the U.S. to start off-shore drilling. Even more unpopular, I don't want oil prices to lower. I want Americans to find alternatives and consume less. We have a history of being the most innovative nation in the world - we got ourselves into this mess, why can't we figure out a way to get ourselves out?
Anthony, you make a good point. To some extent, the outcry for more drilling is a tantrum. "Big Energy" wants to blackmail the American public by saying "let us drill wherever we want and we'll take our boot off your neck". The quid pro quo is permission to drill without restrictions. And if we all agree, they'll make the pain stop (for a little while, anyway).
In the meantime, all the furor over offshore drilling takes the pressure off Bush and the GOP. The new bogeyman is "environmentalists" and the energy monopoly & friends have lots of money to spend to distract a gullible and energy-hungry public.
