Demolition Derby

Who Could

Ever Imagine This Topic?

Since our area is fairly built out, new construction on a wide scale level is rarer than in some places but it still exists.

You can see signs announcing an upcoming hearing for demolition of a building or an adaptation of a building that will provide a new life.  New construction of in-fill projects along with many remodeling/renovation jobs are ongoing.

Grand Opening announcements.  Businesses closed often  without much notice are evident as well.  Just gone.  Seemingly without a trace.  Of course, there is a back story.  There always is, right?

Forecasts not met.  Missed expectations.  Reasons far and wide.   I make it no secret that I like quotes.  They often capture a spirit or the essence of a topic in my mind.  Believe it or not, I even found one, just one, on the subject mentioned in today's post title.   Demolition Derby.

I read it and I laughed a bit to myself.  I remember Keith Jackson from when I was a child and ABC television broadcast each Saturday, The Wide World of Sports each Saturday.  While my knowledge of sports remains rather limited, I appreciated Mr Jackson's play-by-play ability as he effectively communicated and introduced me to a variety of sports I might otherwise never experience.

I've announced every kind of sporting event

except hockey and demolition derby,

and to be frank about it,

I don't really care to do those.

                                                                      Keith Jackson

Demolition Derby and Real Life.  Yeah, there is a correlation and it's really not that much of a stretch of imagination.  At least, I don't think so.

My father used to drink beer with Keith Jackson when he was a local sports commentator here in Seattle. He got real outspoken after a couple beers I was told by my dad.

I keep hearing people speak of a sign of the times but I see things more as a roller coaster with its up and downs.

Happy Saturday Michael Jacobs

Hi Michael- so many things can remind one of a demolition derby. I've never attended one and so far, haven't had a desire to.

Grant Schneider - that could certainly be true.  Thank you for the comment.

Nina Hollander - it makes sense to me on a certain level.

Myrl Jeffcoat - over the years, I have seen many such situations.  It's rather sad.

Joan Cox - me neither.  The idea of me attending a demolition derby in the future is low, perhaps even non-existent.

Wayne Martin - Keith Jackson was a classic.

Kat Palmiotti - I believe this one is from brainyquote.com and I use that site a lot but not exclusively.  Typically I will put a search word/theme into the search function and see what "turns up".  Kinda like Quote Roulette.

Brian England - it would have been unique.  To say the least.

Barbara Todaro - the importance of a good location can't be ignored or underestimated. Thanks for mentioning powder puff derbies, I almost forgot about them and the term.

Sharon Lee - I can certainly understand that.

Rocky Dickerson - Jim McKay, Roone Arledge and so many names from the past.  Quite influential.  As for log rolling  - The Wide World of Sports introduced many competitions to me.  Many of them experienced there only and no place else.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS - that's an interesting tidbit of information.  Thanks for sharing it.

Kathy Streib - I can't imagine why not.

Michael,

I have seen one demolition derby years ago, when I was barely a teenager, and thinking how stupid it was.  One of our friends played ice hockey and once explained the game...I still do not get it...There is a similarity to life in some respect...A

I agree, Michael, there is some similarity. An old building in town was demolished and purchased. Now there will be an exercise studio in its place.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel - life is about finding those similarities.  Not always obvious but deep down we can often find them. . .

Rebecca Gaujot, Realtor® - kind of makes you think, why not just adapt the previous building.

Michael Jacobs, it was in dire need of repair and was a restaurant with an apt above it. They said it would cost more to repair and renovate for the new owner's needs.

Good evening Michael Jacobs,

I've never attended a Demolition Derby and doubt if I find time or the desire to do so. Unfortunately I'm seeing way to much demolition of our history that we need to be reminded of so we don't repeat the same things again..we are learning but to erase the past doesn't make sense on any level.

James Dray - it happens in cities and towns of all sizes.

With so many business closings, many communities are being challenged to find new uses for vacant spaces.

Ha! I got a chuckle out of both Keith Jackson's hockey and demolition derby comment and yours in the end, comparing demolition derby to real life. I think you're onto something, Michael!

Debe Maxwell, CRS - a combination of planned obsolescence and tragic lessons(as well as some good ones at times) of real life.  Smashing cars seems to make sense to me in that aspect.

Michael Jacobs - A funny thing happened to me a day or two ago while traveling through Lewisville, TX. I must drive down Lewisville's Main Street  a couple hundred times or more a year for the past 22 years.  Just when I thought I knew each and every street and store, I noticed a corner lot was bulldozed down and as I waited for the light to turn green, for the life of my, I couldn't remember what was there?

As for cars, Demolition Derby was very popular in IL. I didn't care for the sound of the cars crashing. There's something sad about smashing cars or buildings disappearing and even more disturbing when you can't even remember what building was torn down a few days prior.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - over the years, I have also played that game "what was there before?" as buildings disappear from the cityscape.  It doesn't happen without a process but it does happen.

As for demolition derbies, "sound" is quite apparent as well as the "visual" associated with the event.

Michael Jacobs - It's the strangest disappearing act I've ever seen! And so I wonder, how could something as big as a building that was there before I even came to TX be gone when I must have walked past it a million times or more!

It's the worst sound I ever heard and the visual is very disturbing to me too. How on earth can it be a sport???

I've never been to a demolition derby, but I've been to a rodeo. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I was going to, so who knows...maybe I would enjoy the derby too.
