Searcy basketball girls 1953 tourney program

1953 Girls' Basketball Searcy AR

I Splurged!  I did!  I did!  I bought this old book from ebay for more than I ever thought I would!

But just look at it!  It is the 1953 White County Girls' Basketball Tourney program!  It cost 25 cents at the game to get the program.  It contains pictures, feature stories, cage data (whatever that is) all about the big tournament.

It has pictures of the girls' teams from Griffithville, Rose Bud, Searcy, Judsonia, West Point, Beebe, McRae, Kensett, Bald Knob, Pangburn, Bradford and Central!  Look back at these towns and think how much fun it was to have those teams......girls' teams!  And then think how terrible it was when girls' basketball and any other girls' sports were eliminated from the schools.  Having played basketball in a small school in Georgia, I remember how important it was to have the sport.  The girls are named and they even have members of the fan club for each town.

It is a great part of history and if you want me to, I can put each team in a blog for you to enjoy!

Hi Barbara.....it's so cool to see girls basketball team back in the 50's!  That's a great find. I bet the gals in those area, or their families would love to read about all of them.  Very fun idea!

Thanks, Michael!  I really like this old program.  Now I want one of you experts to tell me WHY girls' sports were ended for so many years!????  We had to have Title IX to get them back.

Ah, the 1950s, a time of innocence.  Oh, how things changed in the decades that followed.

Barbara I read some articles that said the decline in girl's basketball and sports in general is because of a lack of interest. Girls are more interested in academics than sports. Boys continue because there can be a future for them in college and professional sports. Also there is a trend to participate in individual sports like track instead of team sports.

Don Thompson, I don't believe a word of that.  Girls love sports and want to have sports.  Do more research.  I also wonder whether it was just Arkansas that cut them out or everywhere.  For some reason I am thinking it was during JFK's presidency but don't remember.

I ran across something that mentioned 1978 as a time when girl's basketball waned. I think other states were affected.

Dear Paula Anne didn't play basketball but she was a big fan as she was for the Lady Razorbacks. She spent big bucks supporting the program. I have a Lady Razorbacks sticker on the back window of my car.

Paula did play golf.
