Here's to Friluftsliv!

By
Industry Observer with Nature As Neighbors

Friluftsliv (Free-loofts-leev) is a Scandinavian concept which best translates to "fresh air life." Basically, it's enjoying life outdoors. In fact, in Norway kindergartens are, for the most part, held outdoors. As the children are told...

“Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlige klær!” (There's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes.)

The centrality of outdoor activity is so ingrained into their culture that many Scandinavian countries have some version of a law allowing people to access all land for outdoor pleasure and recreation - both private and public.

The Pacific Northwest Offers More Fritluftsliv!

Recently, an article in the Seattle Times touched upon this Scandinavian philosophy as we approach the oft wet and dark, Pacific Northwest winter. This year, especially, with health concerns about indoor gatherings, it makes sense to turn our attention to the outside

For example, today,  we met with our daughter and two grandchildren at a public park. We wore masks, as did she. The children, both under four years of age, played and road their bikes around the trails as we walked. Large tree branches danced in the wind, and Finnegan chased dry leaves as they skittered across the pathways.

It's not an ideal weather day, so we dressed warmly to cope with the gusty, and cold, east wind.  Fortunately, we have plenty of outdoor gear. Warm down jackets, vests, boots, hats, and of course, rain gear. We'll have many more of these days in the coming months.

We think it's important to get outdoors frequently, even if it's a solitary walk with the dog. Exercise and being outside in nature comes with bonuses such as warding off depression and anxiety.  And this year, it represents a safer way to connect with folks we love.

Here's to more fritluftsliv!  Let us know if you'd like to live year-round with nature - at home.

Roy Kelley - we do live in a beautiful spot. But, the weather makes it more challenging to get outside during the late fall and winter months.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel yes, Finnegan enjoyed it very much. They were late, so we had a full hour of exercise ahead of the kids - it worked out well as he was pretty mellow with them.

Kat Palmiotti - I think dogs are a great addition to our lives as they sort of "make" us get outside frequently - they need exercise and walks are good for all of us.

Debb, I too love to be outdoors, if only for a walk, but not so much this morning, as it was 14 degrees and snowing.   I will wait until Tuesday when this storm passes.   Interesting word...have never heard it before.

Hi Debb,
I love expanding my vocabulary and I'm going to impress someone with that word soon.  LOL  You're right... there's no bad weather just bad clothes (for the conditions).

The older I get, the less I like conditions for which I have to pile on the clothes.  But fresh air is always a good thing.  Have a wonderful day in nature with Bernie and Finnegan.

Good morning Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD ,

I'm so glad that Kathy Streib featured your post in her "Ah-Ha" moments for the week. The title caught my eye and I've never heard this word before so thank you for expanding my vocabulary! Fresh air is so invigorating and my son and his family take advantage of the outdoors any time they can!

Hi Debb and Bernie:

I've not heard this word...and my Mom's side of the family is Swedish...so it was fun to learn something new. The Scandinavians certainly embrace the outdoors year round, but certainly many here in the US do as well.

The concept certainly ties in nicely to your style of living as well as your niche market and brand!!

Love love LOVE this post Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD ! My Mom was Norwegian and Irish and they certainly believed in this idea! As little babies she used to bundle us kids up and let us sit outside on the porch in 0 degree weather in MN!  We all love being outside and always have.  I had no idea that this actually was a 'thing' in Sweden......but it sure makes sense to me!

I had never heard this term before ... nor did I know that Scandinavian schools took part in this promotion of outdoors. Fascinating! And they're quite right, as long as they're dressed properly there is no reason to stay indoors. Heading into a COVID-winter, maybe we should give that a try here in the USA ...

Dear Debb & Bernie,

Indeed. Always good to get out and get some fresh air. I find that running around outside is very helpful for children with ADHD. Sunshine & exercise do wonders.
