There was a story in our newspaper today about an elderly 91 year old woman who was supposed to be kicked out of her hi rise home, but instead she has to give up her stove. I couldn't believe that someone would turn a 91 yr old into the street. She had been living in the same hi rise for 40 years.

Here is what happened. It seems that she was served with an eviction notice based on two incidents that happened in January. One involved a piece of meat she was cooking and it burned thus setting off the fire alarm. She didn't know that it was burning because she went to the aid of another hi rise resident who had a medical condition. The elderly woman said that there were other occasions when she had burned food and set off the smoke alarms.

About the same time as the smoke alarm incident, the woman was accused of making threatening comments to other hi rise residents involving weapons. She didn't deny the allegations, but argued that her comments may have been misinterpreted.

She was thus slapped with an eviction notice and set off a series of events that got the housing commission director his job. He said he had no choice but to evict her by saying that the hi rise is subsidized by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. He went on to say that this woman had violated HUD guidelines.

One of the local councilwomen was unhappy with the way the comissioner handled the situation as were some other people in the city and this led to the firing.

Anyway to make a long story short, the elderly woman ended up signing some legal documents stating that she can live in the hi rise but must give up her stove. Apparently this is OK with the woman but it somehow does not sit well with me.

First she was going to get kicked out but instead she loses her right to cook. This just seem right. How can someone kick out a 91 yr old woman and then deny her the right to cook. They could have had someone come in and supervise her or someone could come and cook for her.

This story made me mad but at the same time I am amazed that this woman is living on her own in her own apartment.I just needed to comment on this story because to me it seem like unjustice. That is my two cents.
