New Homes Coming to Old Hoover Estate in Glencoe IL
The Village of Glencoe has approved the subdivision of the Hoover estate’s
12.2 acre site on Green Bay Road south of Lake Cook Road. The property was listed in August 2018 for $15,9000 and sold 43 days later for $10,000,000. It was the largest piece of privately-held property in Cook County.
H. Earl Hoover, nephew of the founder of Hoover and a developer of many patents, bought the property in 1921 and hired noted local architect William Furst to build his home. (Furst designed New Trier High School and Glencoe Village Hall.) His widow died in March 2018 and the property was listed shortly thereafter.
The estate includes a 10,000 square foot Tudor home, a coach house, stable house, gazebo, and greenhouse. Unfortunately, the house sits in the middle of the property and will need to be demolished (the photo at left is not of the main house.)
While the Glencoe Historic Preservation Commission attempted to get landmark status conveyed on the house, their request was rejected. It had been listed by Landmarks Illinois as one of the “most endangered” properties in Illinois that was at risk for demolition. They will, however, leave in place the two brick columns and iron gate at the entry.
The subdivision plan was given final approval by the Glencoe Village council October 15, 2020. In addition to building demolitions, the developer will also be removing approximately 88 trees that will be later replaced by 189 smaller trees.
The subdivision will be named Forest Edge - I assume because it backs up to Turnbull woods, part of the Cook County Forest Preserves.
Stay tuned for more information on the Hoover estate when it becomes available.
