Iwasaki Yatarō

By
Managing Real Estate Broker with Fathom Realty PB00068179

Iwasaki Yatarō was born in Aki, Tosa Province, Japan back in 1835.  He was imprisoned for seven months due to a dispute with the local ruling clan.  After his release, he worked as a clerk for the Yamauchi government. He was responsible for trading camphor oil and paper to buy ships, weapons and ammunition.

In 1868, he travelled to Osaka where in 1870 he became president of the Tsukumo Trading Company.  From 1874-75 he was contracted by the Japanese government to transport Japanese soldiers and war materials.  With his new-found wealth he invested in mining, ship repair and finance industries.  He died in 1885 from stomach cancer is was 50.

What you may not know about Iwasaki is that in 1873, he changed the name of Tsukumo Trading Company to something I know all of you are familiar with, Mitsubishi.

That is interesting and definitely a large and well-known company.  If they don't start making electric cars then I think their business will fall by the wayside, haha.

Good morning James,

Funny how some get their starts.

They used to have a good race car back in the '70s.

Make yourself an astonishing day.

Hello James - we understand from your many stories, there is often a lot more to a person and/or a company than what we "think" we may know.

I had no idea Mitsubishi was that old. Interesting read - he unfortunately died way too early. What else might he have accomplished?

Akira Iwasaki used to work for me. A well likely guy likes to be called Aki.  He told me he found out his mom was a picture bride ordered from Kusho Island as many Japanese Americans did. He was the happiest guy when they offered him $40,000 indemnity being in the interment camp. Aki, How long you stayed behind barbed wires?  One month only. I was born at the camp hospital.  The healthest infant had to cut his stay short going back to California.

His parents went to 1st California TV show lottery and won $50,000 plus the $80K added from US government. His dad said playing Ko game at the camp is easy. Picking California strawberries are back breaking. They sold their urban farm not far from Google campus.
