Just a few days from now, the most incredible racing
machines in the world will converge upon Sunny Isles Beach FL for a
weekend of high performance boating action. This event is free to watch
from anywhere along Sunny Isles Beach and provides a great afternoon of
family fun and entertainment. Some people call this sort of racing –
NASCAR on water. It’s unpredictable, it’s exciting and it’s all
happening on June 19 - 22nd.

The boats will race in the ocean but the land based activity will all
take place in Haulover Park, directly across the street from the
southernmost end of the race course. This high performance weekend will
bring four different boating organizations together in order to make one
mega event. It all starts on Thursday – June 19th as the boats start to
arrive from all over the United States and set up camp in Haulover Park.
Then on Friday – the Historic Boat Racing Association will host a race
from Sunny Isles Beach to Bimini and back. This is a 100 mile run that
will separate the men from the boys as HORBA resurrect true offshore
racing. (For more info visit
www.historicraceboats.com) At 5:30 pm on Friday afternoon the
winning boats will be escorted from race village thru- Sunny isles beach
on A1A and then back to Race Village for a victory celebration! Boatshed
of Florida is hosting The Friday night Victory Celebration party for the
winners of the Don Aronow Memorial Ocean Race featuring the Albert
Castiglia band! This party is open to the public and will last until
10pm.
There is no charge to enter Race Village on Friday night so visitors are
welcome to enjoy the Friday Night party and exotic car and motorcycle
show provided by South Florida Toys and Chopper Nation of Miami. Add in
some Historic Race Boat and a fleet of modern day racing machines that
will be racing on Sunday, and you have an event that is sure to fill any
speed junkie’s need for speed. There will also be food, beverages and
t-shirts available for purchase at the Racer Village. Who knows, you
might even get to meet with some of today’s top offshore race teams and
get an autograph or a photo with the teams!
On Saturday morning, The Florida Powerboat Club will stage the
Thunderboat Rally down memory lane. Stu Jones President of FPC said “We
are thrilled to be a part of this huge event and the timing could not be
more appropriate. It was fifteen years ago, in June 1993 when the FPC
was founded in North Miami Beach, a spin-off from its predecessor, the
Sunny Isles Powerboat Club. As far back as 1991, these poker run events
were staged from landmark marinas including Sunny Isles and Fort Apache.
This Saturday rally will take a trip down memory lane, as offshore
powerboats will travel from Turnberry Isles, passing the former site of
Fort Apache Marina, then running up Sunny Isles Beach in formation. The
fleet will turn southbound, and run coastal waters to Biscayne Bay, with
Gilberts Key Largo as their lunch destination. A helicopter crew will
chase the powerboats and document the exciting day for the Powerboating
in Paradise TV show, on SUN SPORTS network. To join in on the fun,
contact the FPC office at: 954-545-1414 or go online at
www.flpowerboat.com.
The action does stop there, on Saturday afternoon the Offshore Super
Series boats will run time trials on the race course and then on Sunday
the big show starts at noon with a Super Lite Tunnel exhibition race,
then the real action starts as the Offshore Super Series boats take to
the ocean and blisters the beach with speeds exceeding 150 miles per
hour. This is one event you won’t want to miss. See
www.offshoressuperseries.com for more details and course maps.
