My second job

By
Real Estate Agent with Realty One Group # S.0190863

My second job ever after high school was working for the San Diego County edition of The Los Angeles Times. Now back in the early 80s, we had this thing you may not have heard of. They were called housewives. The husband would go to his job and the wife stayed home, cleaned, cooked, took care of the kids and waited for the hubby to come home. Something else you may not be aware of is that back then San Diego hated anything to do with Los Angeles. Los Angeles was the crowded smoggy city (look at films made in the late 70s – the reason you can’t see across the valley was the thick smog from cars back then) that the winds kept sending their smoke to us and we did not like it. Here I was selling the San Diego county edition of the L.A. Times. But I was tops in the division. Why? Because I was selling to housewives.

The way I figured it, those wives had screaming brats, cleaning appliances that weighed a ton, food burning, errands to run….and not one person saying, “thank you”. And certainly nobody saying, “You’re sexy”.

So, I got on the phone and using my DJ voice that some of you have already heard, I slowed my pace down, lowered my voice and smoothed it out just a bit. I wanted my voice to sound like I had planned a romantic dinner for 2 and I was bringing her a glass of brandy and a gentle kiss before I let her go soak in a long hot bubble bath before I served her a romantic meal for 2. “Hi, I’m calling for the San Diego County edition of the Los Angeles Times.” My coworkers sounded like they were selling a newspaper. I sounded like I was cooing sweet nothings in their ear. You see, I figured their husbands hadn’t said so much as a “You look nice” in months.  My voice sounded like they were an enchanting temptress that I was going to woo and seduce.

Mind you, I never said anything inappropriate, I just made my tone of my voice highly seductive. That’s how I became their number one seller.  It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.

Good morning Nina Hollander I hear that the museum of natural history may have an exhibit of one. It is called the "June Cleaver" LOL

Rocky Dickerson ha=ha, Rocky. And I'm lucky to recognize the name, June Cleaver, as we had no TV in my home until I was 8 years old and that was not one of the shows on the approved list in our household. (Maybe my mother was afraid I'd decide my career should be as a housewife.)

Hi Rocky Dickerson - This is a very powerful message and so true. On another note, my parents, my husband's parents as well as we all got the L.A. Times.  We especially looked forward to the Sunday edition.  I have been gone from SoCal for over 13 years but remember all the different areas that had "beefs" with each other.  Some over smog and some over water rights.  Mountain communities such as Lake Arrowhead, etc. didn't like the"flatlanders" visiting either!

Rocky Dickerson  Another great analogy -  it is not what you say but but how you make the person feel when you say /how you say it -- love your stories

Hi Rocky- I do remember the "Donna Reed" days. What you did was take the time to show the person you were calling that they weren't just a name on a list. That's important. And I do believe that it's not what you say but how you say it.

Wow, Mad Men. I do remember my dad coming home and having a glass of bourbon and mom telling us to let him "unwind" from his hard day. Lol.  Fortunately, I'm pretty sure he told her she was beautiful as often as she needed. That's where our story is different. However, you made your point well. D

Hi Rocky Dickerson
You reminded me that my Aunt, with whom my brother and I lived with after our parents died, would drill into my brain it's not what you say but how you say it. I think that's why intentions often get misunderstood through the written word.  We need to connect verbally to truly understand.

Yes Carol Williams and perhaps that is why so many misunderstandings occur in text messages.
