Since we're trying to furnish our lake house on a budget, I'm all about saving money. I love bargain hunting, especially yard-sailing on the weekend. The rest of the week, I'll pop into our local Goodwill Stores when I'm in the area. I've found some great nautical lamps and a brand new comforter set in the last few weeks. There are five stores that I frequent; one in Lynchburg, Forest, Madison Heights, Bedford at Smith Mountain Lake.

You just never know what you'll find and today I came upon a happy surprise. I walked in to the Forest store and look what I found- for a whole lot less than craigslist!

Check out your local Goodwill Stores, you'll find merchandise for less and will be supporting a great cause. From the Goodwill website:

GOod post. You find goddwill store in some unusual places sometimes. We have one in a new upscale shoping center in Campbell station. I would never have guessed that they would put on in such a nice area.

Debbie! Last week at a local junk store, I scored a Turkish wool rug 8 x 10, looks brand new! for guess how much??? .... 50 bucks!! It is my new joy in my living room!

We don't have 'Goodwill' shops here, but several by other names that I frequent regularly - I love the diversity of old / used stuff.

I've found exquisite antique pieces like this chair with a sofa that I had rebuilt and reupholstered for a client.

Just love it!!

I know two people that make a very good living going to Goodwill stores and then selling the material they find on Craigslist. I think most people are not willing to go to Goodwill because of the image that it congers up that if you go there you are poor.

Rich, that's one of the reasons I like to support Goodwill, they are helping those who need it the most.

Ruthmarie, it's always good to check the store late Saturday afternoon, after yardsales. A lot of people bring the items that didn't sell to Goodwill and you can pick up a bargain.

Duane, I just love to pop in because you don't know what you'll find. I usually bring a bag or two with me so I'm cleaning out before I buy more!

Deborah! Love the chair, just gorgeous! We have other stores besides Goodwill but some of them are kind of junky so I tend to return to Goodwill. If you're ever in Virginia... I'd love some help with ideas for the house!

Todd, I'm sure there are a lot of people doing that, if you know what to look for I'm sure you can make a good income by reselling. It's too bad but your right. There's a stigma associated with thrift stores but there are one of my favorite places to find treasures. I'm still in shock that I found a Boston Celtics chair!

A Goodwill opened up in Warminster and I am  glad I can drop off things rather than wait for someone to pick them up..

You should have seen this chair and sofa before I had them redone - U-G-L-Y!! Most people wouldn't bat an eye at them - probably most wouldn't spend the money fixing them either, but it was well worth it.

Gita, I was surprised by some of the store locations, they are sitting on prime real estate and get a lot of traffic. I like having one a mile from my home, it makes it easy to drop items off. Thanks for commenting!

Deborah, that's why you are the designer, you have the vision and can see the potential! The chair is so pretty, I love the woodwork.

Hi Debbie,  I love the fact that your doing your lake house shopping at the Goodwill.  Goodwill offers some one of kind goodies!  I bet your lake house is going to look awesome if you keep picking up goodies at stores like Goodwill!  The Goodwill here in Richmond, VA  has an auction several days a week.  I use to go with family members or friends.  We had so much fun and got a few really great deals.  Well you "done good" promoting a fine organization.  Post some pics of your lake house when you've got it done!

Cindy, I love to check out resale and yard sales too, you're always going to find bargains. We did have a really nice DAV in downtown Lynchburg (that received leftover furniture from Haverty's) but they have closed recently. I love the idea of auctions, that's a great way to raise funds for Goodwill. I'll have to check them out the next time I'm in Richmond. Thanks for commenting!
