George Washington slept here and it is home to the oldest winery in the country. However, there is no connection between the two ... Orange County, NY, established 1683.
So, for what is Orange County known?
- The earliest carbon dated human settlement in North America, over 12,500 years old
- Mastodons ... more of their skeletons can be found here than any place on earth
- The oldest winery in the country, the Brotherhood winery in Washingtonville, founded 1839
- Its black dirt region, where Pine Island is the onion capital of the world
- The oldest military academy in the United States, the United States Military Academy at West Point
- The beginning of the ecological movement in the U.S. at Storm King Mountain when environmentalists prevented a utility company from destroying the mountain
- An alternate site for landing the space shuttle, since Stewart International Airport has one of the longest runways in the U.S.
- Henry Hudson sailed up the Hudson and anchored here in Cornwall Bay, 1609.
Okay ... back to George:
- George slept a lot of places but held his longest residency during the Revolutionary War in Newburgh.
- His headquarters became the first registered national historic landmark.
- In addition, it was here that he founded the Order of the Purple Heart.
- The last cantonment of the Revolutionary War is located in New Windsor.
Oh! And this is the Orange County that is home to Orange County Choppers!
But I prefer my Harley (although I ride only on the back seat).
We might not be the most famous, but we are original!
