For the second time this week, Maryland has set a record for the most new coronavirus cases reported in a single day. The Maryland Department of Health reported Thursday that 2,910 cases of the virus were confirmed in the past 24 hours.

That breaks the record set Saturday, when 2,321 new infections were confirmed. Tuesday saw the second-highest increase in coronavirus cases, with 2,149 new cases reported.

There have been a total of 174,733 cases of the virus in Maryland, state health officials said Thursday.

Testing Volume Ramps Up

The increase in new cases comes as more tests are being conducted around the state.

In the past 24 hours, health officials reported the results from 43,963 coronavirus tests, the largest volume reported in a single day to date. In March when Maryland first faced the coronavirus, officials said only about 50 tests were conducted daily.
