#GIVINGTUESDAYCLT: "GENEROSITY IS NOT ON PAUSE IN 2020"

Tuesday, December 1st is the eighth year of Giving Day, also known as Giving Tuesday. The initial idea behind Giving Day/Giving Tuesday was to inspire personal philanthropy and to encourgage some form of charitable giving: be it time or money or goods (or all three) during the holiday season. In 2019 some $511 million were raised on-line in the USA alone; and some $1.9 billion were raised across 60 countries. That's a lot of giving!

How You Can "Give" In The Charlotte Metro Area:

  • Assistance League of CharlotteAssistance League of Charlotte: sponsors philanthropic programs which feed, cloth, mentor, educate children and families in Mecklenburg County. Financial donations are very much appreciated, however the Assistance League would also be delighted for donations to its AL Thrift Shop of clothing, shoes, household items, electronics, linenes, furniture, books, toys. And you can also volunteer to help out in the AL Thrift Shop.

  • Council For Children's RightsCouncil For Children's Rights: the largest child advocacy organization in the Southeast with some 30 attorneys on staff. The Council needs volunteer attorneys and custody advocates to assist with custody cases. Financial donations are what the Council, as well. Check out the Council For Children's Right's Facebook page.

  • Dress For Success in CharlotteDress For Success: (one of my personal favorites as a former corporate executive)--helps more than 900 Charlotte area women each year to find jobs, sponsors career preparation and retention programs, as well as provides appropriate clothing for the work world. Their needs require clothing appropriate for interviews and office work, office supplies, and of course financial contributions. They'll take any and all volunteer help you can provide in their programs. Check out the Facebook Page for Dress For Success.

  • Ronald McDonald House Of Charlotte: provides housing for the families of children who are being treated in Charlotte area medical facilities. Ronald McDonald House needs monetary contributions, gift card to local grocery stores, canned meals, toiletries, paper towels. Or you can help out at the House with evening meals. The Ronald McDonald house also has a wonderful "Adopt A Room" program worth checking out.

This is a very short list of the local, Charlotte organizations looking for help on Giving Tuesday and throughout the 2020holiday season. There are more than 500 Charlotte area non-profit organizations looking for your assistance, including The Humane Socierty of Charlotte, Gift of Adoption/CarolinasMen's Shelter of Charlotte, Friendship Trays  and so many more. Whether your interests lie in helping children, our military/veterans, animals, educational institutions, health services, cultural organizations, there's something for everyone. And this year, the need is greater than ever.

Wayne Martin hi Wayne... it really boggles my mind when I see that just in Charlotte there are over 500 organizations looking for help. It always makes me wonder how many more are out there that are no so identifiable. At least these organizations are out there and do the best they can.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel hi Alexandra... we've been doing Save the Children for some 50 years. I like to support locally and of course, at the top of my list is always the Humane Society. I'm always happy for an excuse to throw a bit more their way. And our older daughter makes an annual contribution in my name at Christmas, as well. One of my favorite Christmas gifts each year.

Michael Jacobs hi Michael... I would hope your wager is correct. In 2018, in Charlotte alone more than $75 million was raised on Giving Tuesday. Haven't seen numbers reported anywhere for 2019, but hopefully it was at least the same and this year the same and more.

Rocky Dickerson hi Rocky... one year, I actually scrolled through the 500+ organizations in Charlotte needing help... it was quite the eye-opener to see the kinds of need out there and all the wonderful volunteers who come out and try to help.

Nina I have not heard Giving Tuesday advertised around here.  We have other giving opportunities, but there is always room for one more.

Hi Nina- it's always good to give back but this year it's even more important. What a good idea to share local giving opportunities!!!   We donate throughout the year to Give Kids The World.

George Souto good morning, George. I suspect that individual cities have to sign up to participate in an organized way with a sponsor in Giving Tuesday.

James Dray so long as you're not a dollar short for being a day late, James! :) Seriously, we also give throughout the year, but I like having a day that also focuses on giving... always hopeful people will reach further into their pockets.

That is a lot of giving Nina Hollander . My question would be: How much greater is that than any other day? I did not give yesterday (except for my time) but throughout the year I give much of my total income.

Bob "RealMan" Timm hi Bob... Charlotte raises over $75 million on Giving Tuesday each year... I can't believe that we are raising that much money day in and day out. I gave a little extra to the Humane Society, to which I contribute throughout the year... so I think this day very much raises awareness and money over and bove the normal course of donations.

Thanksso much for the Thanksgiving Day card, which arrived yesterday.

I agree completely Nina Hollander and I am glad that they have a day set for giving to remind those who do not routinely give BUT I just wonder how much of the number they boast is just normal giving.

Bob "RealMan" Timm hi Bob... the monies raised on Giving Tuesday are always accounted for in a discrete manner. They know how much comes in from those solicitations.

I did not know that Nina Hollander . I am glad they, and many others had a very successful day. 👍
