John William Jeffcott was born in Kerry, Ireland back in 1796. He graduated from Trinity College, Dublin. He was called to the English Bar in 1826. In 1830, he was installed as Chief Justice of the colony of Sierra Leone. Being the only judge in the colony most of his work was associated was to end the Transatlantic slave trade.
When he returned to England in 1833, he was knighted for his efforts. That same year he was involved in a duel where he shot and killed Dr. Peter Hennis. He was acquitted, but his reputation was damaged. In 1836, he travelled to South Australia arriving in 1837. Later that same year he died, he was 41.
What you may not know about John is that he was the first judge of the Supreme Court of South Australia. He only presided over two cases in his career.
