Honesty is described by Webster's dictionary as: 1 truthful: trustworthy 2)a sincere or fair (honest effort) b. gained by fair mean's 3 frank and open.

When my children were very young I made an agreement with them...If you do something wrong and you tell me you made a mistake, and you are honest about it, you will not get into trouble..honesty BREEDS TRUST!...If you do something wrong and you are not honest...your going to be grounded, etc.

My children challenged me on this...they made mistake's...the first situation was when my oldest daughter was in third grade and it was April Fool's day..Those kid's didn't know...they thought they were being funny...so, they hid in the theatre at the school...they were genuinely just having fun with their teacher....I think that those children thought that the teacher would know where they were all hiding and shout out together "April Fool's"...didn't happen...The whole class thought she would figure it out...apparently she in some way suggested this..then didn't realize..the ramification's of her suggestion.

After that, and several other tests...my children realized, that I meant what I said...They in turn told their friends...MY home,,,was full of their friend's all the time...WHY? My mother won't get mad at you...unless you lie to her...she'll talk to you about anything...but lie to her once and you are in deep poop...Tell her the truth...and you have a friend forever...

My son is also here on AR, I invited him, so, if this wasn't true, I wouldn't post it!

Honesty is ALWAY'S THE BEST POLICY!

Live, love and learn!  Life is short...keep it simple! keep it honest!  :-)

Wow, my father taught me this lesson a long time ago. He caught me in a lie and his disappointment in me cut me deeply and taught me that honesty is the best policy. I was probably only 7 or 8 yrs old, but that experience stays with me to this day. I carried this lesson over to my kids. I'd rather they tell me everything instead of trying to cover up a mistake. That always makes matters worse. Other than that incident, I was a perfect child (yeah right!).

Doris,

Honesty and trust is so important to children...then...making promises and keeping them, no lies...make them the best in the world...Amy (my  oldest) graduated Phi Betta Kappa...was  a "Who's who", David...one of 13 Valedictorian's...don't worry, I addressed this mess. and was all over the paper,  Ashley..the youngest...had a great golf career.......whole in one at 16...had a great golf scholarship (full) in Florida...(so I moved here...) then she had this relevation...she said," Mama...I love the team sports (She played basketball [you have no idea...when her coach said...she has ICE RUNNING through her veins...she made the 3 pointer...)...

She wanted to play team sports... she said she could golf later... True that...

She ended up being the Captain of her Soft Ball team...even though she graduated she is still a mentor...with the undergrads...she has secured a wonderful position...she is a wonderful daughter and I an so proud of the fact that she is helping many other kids.

Make's me smile more...she is back to golf and is teaching her friend's the support...Good think that that $800. a month worth of lesson's were worth it..!

I love my daughter, she is fabulous....You treat your children with respect...and they will do the same...

Love you, my 3...Amy, David, and Ashley...You are wonderful!

I don't promise my children that they will not get in trouble, but they know the penalty is many times worse if they are not honest.  My children are very honest.

Mike,

I am happy for you...I decided when I had children...to give them lattitude...with exceptions...They told their friends...and I had more children to raise than I thought...their friends who used to hang out at my house...who I use to help do their home work...who...2 in medical school... still call me for advice and help with classes....I regret NOTHING...about how I raised my children...and the friend's that were with them...I love staying in touch...and I wouldn't change a thing...

Imagine a bunch of kid's...helping me dig a garden...cause they were just helping MAMA Monsour....THEN!! Imagine all of them, helping me...clean corn...help me freeze it and going further...helping me can tomatoes and make salsa...THESE WERE SOME FANTASTIC FRIEND'S OF MY CHILDREN...Proud of them...one is in Medical School...:-)

My children & I have the same rules. If they get into trouble at school, the first thing they do when they get in the car if "fess up". They never know if I already know or not but they aren't in trouble if they tell all right away.

I had some rough time with my kids then they get into terrible teens. I guess that's when I got my gray hair.  We lived awaiting the documents from the American Consulate, were in Moscow without a residency permit.

Yes, it was not about the honesty, but even when they are honest, you may have the toughest time of your life.

You are lucky if you did not have it

Randy,

No punishment for honest...a little verbal explanation as to why they should have thought first...acted better, etc...but I kept up my end of the deal...and they learned and I had very little issues after that.
